I think he will be around. We have him on a good deal at a position where the only other player right now is Tavon Wilson.

Last year he looked bad, possibly because of the injury.
He has had a year to rehab.

If his injury was the reason he fell off the depth chart at the end of camp last year, then he has a shot.

If not, then he has no shot. But if that were the case, I don't even know why he'd still be on the roster at this point. That indicates to me the coaching staff is at least as curious about how much his poor preseason performance was due to injury as you are. And obviously, they are more information and might even know the answer to the question.

So, I'm keeping an open mind.

I have no idea what he has left but if he really does have some quality play left in him, even in a rotational role, then this is going to be one nasty secondary. he could be toast but it's hard to understand why Belichick would keep him around rather than clear out the cap space if he's done.

It's possible Belichick is looking at him as a rotational defender in a hybrid S/LB role but if so then he better be really good at it because that is a lot to invest in that role.

I still think that was severely overblown. I read some articles saying AZ knew they couldn't keep him because of salary limitations and so they were trying to ease him out and get the kids some playing time, both for the future and for their fans. In the end, he didn't rate out that badly for them in coverage or otherwise.

And I don't think the draft is that deep at Safety. Pryor and Ha Ha are solid prospects...other than that, meh.

That's what was being reported even before the 2012 season, so I'm not sure how you could say it was overblown.

Here's why:

"Despite his 14 starts, Wilson was pulled off the field in nickel sets late in the season and his release doesn't come as a great surprise. With former Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton migrating to the Cleveland Browns, Wilson was bound for the door as Bruce Arians and a new coaching staff take over.

Wilson, 33, was due $2.5 million this season along with a $1 million roster bonus as part of the four-year, $16.5 million contract he signed in July."

He was being paid like a 3-down SS, but he wasn't playing that anymore (and no one's expecting him to play it here, either) and had just signed a 4-year deal. New coach, new system, no chance to do anything in the immediate future often = veterans getting cut to save cap.

Wilson's costing us next to nothing this year.

I'm not harping on his cost. What I'm harping on are his prospects at SS for the Patriots. He shouldn't see the field as an SS. He was struggling in coverage there as far back as 2011. Now, as a LB in a big nickel package, I don't have an issue. His losing a step won't be as noticeable there. But for a SS prospect, I have to think that the team looks at Clinton-Dix (not high on him personally), Bucannon, a LB/SS hybrid like Pierre-Louis (I like the sound of that personally... our Kam Chancellor perhaps?), or a CB to SS conversion in Exum, McGill, etc. (big bodied CB's that cover ground and can hit a little).

While I dont think he will be on the roster I am not as certain as the option for no lets on but that was my vote.

I only see a few possibilities he is on the roster but I think they can use as much time as they need to determine this and he likely will be here for camp.

possibilities he makes the 53:

1) Big nickle type role - Most don't think he has enough to be full time safety but if he can fill a role a spot could be there.

2) Starting Strong Safety - Possibility one is if they are willing to lose some coverage for a physical presence and the only reason this can be possible is the shear ground that Revis and McCourty can cover. I dont see it as I think we could do better but lets face it right now there are not a lot of options.

3) Starting Strong Safety - Possibility two a year rehabing finds him the fountain of youth and he squeezes one more good year out of his body. I highly doubt this as father time doesn't work that way but I would leave a slight possibilty he was dealing with something in camp that cost him the year but was not serious and that he had more in the tank than we realized.

4) Back Up Safety - This ties to option 1 as I think he would need a role and not just be the back up but right now I see him as the 3rd best safety under contract (though the STs might have more value to the team).

Note: I dont think 3 and 4 are very likely and would rather see youth and upside as depth.

Possible, but I'll be shocked if the Pats first 3 picks aren't spent on the lines/TE or maybe a linebacker. But then, I'm shocked by the Pats draft every year!

I didn't think he was going to make the 53 if he wasn't IR'ed last year. He was anything but impressive when he was on the field.

Poll Question (Vote Above)

I may be in the minority but unless he suffers a preseason injury, I expect Adrian Wilson to be on the 53-man roster in 2014. I just do not expect it to be as a safety, I think he will work with the LBs and see reps in the nickel and dime packages as a cover LB.

What do you think?

I think you're correct! You ARE in the minority!

Kills me to diss the outlook for the brother but he's past the Best Used By Date. It happens to all.

If he refuses to give Revis #24 then I kinda hope he gets cut
