Do Pats go for RB despite D needs .. if McCaffrey falls to them?

Here's the plan. Someone be sure to let BB know:

Step 1: Trade JAG to Cleveland for their second pick, from Philly, which will hopefully be in the #8-10 range overall
Step 2: Trade back from the Philly pick for #17 (1st) and #49(2nd)
Step 3: Draft 2 players in the first (#17 and #32), and 2 players in the second (#49 and #64)

That should be enough to draft an elite prospect at LB, DT, RB and CB... and still have a 3rd to spend to on grooming a new QB.

Those types of moves definitely fit BB's draft MO

D neeeds? Every first round pick and bunch 2nd rounders in last years were used to build defense.

I'm not sure McCaffery is a priority. The age and FAs on D makes me nervous.

Barring a trade or FA signings, ED, DT, ILB, FS, CB will all be primary needs.

They might need to think about TE too. Good group of players coming out.

The might be able to squeeze one more top year out of JE11, DA and LG but young talent would be nice in those positions.

Watching a young WR like Malcolm Mitchell do well is a breath of fresh air.

If they can somehow trade Garoppolo for a 1st, I'd want them to package that with their own 1st and grab Myles Garrett.

He might have to fall to at least #2 or 3 though.

I can't believe we have two threads on christian mccaffrey with the baltimore game looming.

Amen to watching Mitchell grow and make contributions. Every catch he makes brings three times the joy.

Ed?

Be careful what you ask for. Safeties are listed at 5 and 6.

I actually think they will need a safety sooner rather than later. I think Harmon is good as gone and DMC will be 32 at the start of the 2018 season with a sizable cap number. Chung will be in his early 30s in 2018 as well but is on cheap dollars.

No. The Patriots need the best DE/OLB still on the board.

I don't think BB values RB's as highly as other positions........White,Vereen,Ridley within last 5 years and not one first rounder.......Maroney last first round pick ......

That's a mighty small sample size, though. In those 5 years, the Patriots have drafted a whopping 3 first rounders! In fact, the one and only offensive player they've drafted in the decade since Maroney is Nate Solder.

I definitely agree that BB is less inclined to devote big resources to the RB position than some coaches. I also think he's reluctant to draft WRs very high because it's such a hard position to project from college to the Pats' system. BUT, I also feel certain that if a player like Calvin Johnson or Ezekiel Elliott had dropped to the Pats, he would have taken them in a heartbeat. IMO every position on offense or defense is worth 1st-round consideration if it's the right player.

McCaffrey is a quality player but I doubt he'd be the most strategic or impactful upgrade to the roster in round 1, especially given the depth of the position in this draft.

That makes sense. I just wouldn't want to be around this board if that scenario actually happened...that the Pats trade up to pick in the top few spots....and then take a safety.

The people who poo-poo it aren't thinking it though nor are they recounting what BB does with rock star 1st round picks. He NEVER puts a 1st rd pick in the fire without vets helping him. Mayo had Bruschi. Wilfork had Traylor. Hightower had Mayo. Brown has Branch. Seymour had Anthony Pleasant. Chandler had Wilfork and Nink.

If for some miracle by trading Jimmy lands them a top 10 pick its incredibly logical for him take a safety that can play a great centerfield or up on the line as BB plays 5/6 sometimes 7 DBs 80% of the time anyway.

Plus Jordan Richards is terrible. BB is hoping he is the next Chung but I don't see it happening.

The only two RBs that are worth high picks at this point are Fournette and Cook, and both will be gone before the Pats pick (unless the Pats trade up). I would not touch McCaffrey unless he falls to us in the second round.

I think there is 99% chance the Patriots select who they deem to be the Best TE instead of a RB. Unlike some of us I don't think BB is going into 2017 having a feeling of Durability about Gronk who's coming off a Back Surgery.

I'll eat my hat if BB picks a RB in the first round.....

That and if its true that Marty rejected a $7m/aav deal and headed to FA and with no one home grown to be TE2 that can catch the ball if Gronk goes down again it makes a helluva lot of sense to spend a 2nd or 3rd rounder on a good TE.

Not ever. Running backs will never be a top pick for BB.

if he falls to them, he will fall past them ..... there's got to be another Joe Thuney type lying around somewhere

Cook is a beast. My RB big board would look like: Cook, Fournette, Perine for the top 3. I really think McCaffery is overrated.
What do you think of Foreman from Texas? Saw a few plays where he looked like a monster. 6'1" 25o
