Does anyone here have any strong feelings about Curtis Martin? My mom told me I was devastated when I was a kid but I really don't remember, I guess my grief from the whalers leaving the year before blocked this out. Now I really don't think about him at all and I almost never think of him as a patriot, so I guess I've gotten over 8 year old men's bitterness and sadness.

$12 million offer from the Pats vs. $36 million offer from the Jets, and the question is??

Curtis Martin was a really good guy and a great football player, this is the business part of all of Football.

I dunno. He's a Jet to me. Like others have said, he had to watch the Pats win three Super Bowls while he toiled away in Jestland.

Great guy and great player who did what we all would have done and took the more lucrative offer.

... to be coached by a father figure he loved.

Mmmmm, I always paraphrased Chris Berman's nickname of "My favorite Martin" in to "my favorite traitor" when I was a kid. Hated the fact he skipped to the NYC but never actually stopped somewhat liking him.

That's the key right there. If the offer was a penny more Curtis was still jumping and playing for Tuna.

Probably the hardest FA loss of ours I've had to deal with

Poor Curtis wasn't the last guy who fell for Bill Parcell's line of ********. Otherwise we wouldn't have to see that self centered, self promoting, .500 coach, get nominated for the Pats HOF every year.

Parcells was a builder, who's tactics were not built for long term success....and he never had long term success at anyone place. If I were reviewing his strengths, number one on the list was building strong staffs. Number two was instilling an edge in the locker room that for a short time would get the most out of his teams, and 3 he gave good media head.

I thought he was a very good coach, who the media fell in love with, and they get to pick who gets into the HOF. On the other hand, the Pats fans have the final say on who gets into OUR HOF, and thus far, we have once again shown our intelligence and football knowledge and kept that mercenary out of it.

BB has done the HARDEST thing for a HC to do, and that is MAINTAIN success in a field that is heavily weighted against it. That's why his is the ONLY HC that belongs in our HOF. And since the mediots pick the pro football HOF, I couldn't care less who goes in there.

And as to the OP, I'm happy for the career Curtis Martin had. He was a great RB, and I'm sorry Parcells stole a few rings from him. While he was here, he played hard and well, and when he was with the Jets, he was an opponent to be respected.

I assume the question is because he is featured in A Football Life this week. That show actually presents him in a very good light.

Good guy. Good teammate. Tough player. I hated when he went to the Jets, but as he said, "I thought I was worth more than Drew Bledsoe's signing bonus." He was right, when the Pats low-balled him and lost. He got 3 times as much from the Jets, and the return was 11000 rushing yards with 1 missed game over 6 seasons.

The salt in the wound was that Robert Edwards replaced him. 1100 yards in his rookie year, making it feel like Martin might have been replaced, only to lose him for good after a freak accident at the Pro Bowl. Then no real running back until Antowain Smith 3 years later.

not the thread that *****es about Collin Kapernick not standing for the anthem for 60+ pages?
Let's start a new thread about whether "X" player who donned a Patriots uniform in the past and is now retired would have sat down or stood. Bonus points for political slams and unfounded allegations against presumed opponents.

Football has become less violent than politics, especially now that you can joke about killing your opponent or claim that whole chunks of society are scum. Long story short, thank god for football -- even sans Brady -- during this difficult time.
