The New England Patriots' comeback win over the Dallas Cowboys drew the highest television rating for a regular-season NFL game on Fox since Brett Favre's return to Green Bay.
Fox's national broadcast Sunday, mainly the Patriots' 20-16 victory, earned a 17.1 rating and 31 share. It was Fox's third highest-rated regular-season game in the last 10 years and the best since a 17.4 for the Vikings-Packers matchup in 2009.

it would be a wierd coincidence if espn were to announce that last nights jets fins game had the lowest viewer ratings in a decade :rocker:

Aside from two marquee franchises, it also helped that it was broadcast to the entire country save for portions of the southeast (TB/NO) and the SF Bay Area (grrr!).

Yeah but imagine if that game was played on Monday night like the Packers Vikings was (Oct 5th 20090 where the coverage was nationwide? A 17.1 for a regular day game as opposed to a 17.4 on Monday night is pretty impressive if you ask me.

The Miami Chicago game is still number 1. Sure has stood the test of time.

Was the Packers/Vikings game a SNF game on NBC or a MNF game on ESPN? If indeed an ESPN game, that 17.4 is even more impressive as cable has a hard time surpassing broadcast TV.

Chicago/Miami happened back when MNF was an event and before cable (and the dozens to hundreds of channels) made the widespread household penetration it has today. Topping that regular season game will be tough to do. If any regular season game deserves top billing, it is probably that one. I remember being in the minority picking Dan Marino against the 12-0 Bears, then bragging about it to my high school classmates the next day.

Chris

The game that they are talking about was not the 10/05/09 game. They are talking about the game Favre went to GB which was 11/1/09 and a Sunday game. Since it was on Fox it could not be a Monday game.

Thanks to blackouts, it was even on in Tampa.

I think ESPN is in about 99 MM households compared to the NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, PBS which is in about 111 MM so a delta of about 10%. But for people that would ever watch sports, I think the penetration is about equal. So maybe the 90 yr old granny who has the rabbit ears on top of her TV doesn't have ESPN, but would she be watching the NFL if she got cable?

I stand corrected. Hence the term FOX.
