I do expect us to finalize Springs, add Lew Sanders, and add another veteran defensive back in free agency (hopefully Bodden). One of these picks is likrly be traded into 2010 or for a player. I also am hoping to add Jason Taylor.

What I want from this draft (and before) is to shore up the front seven and the OL of the future. Consider adding

LB Jason Taylor
23 LB Maualuga (or your substitute LB)
58 DT Hood
34 OG/OC Unger (or Mack or Wood)
99 OT Murtha (or one of the many others of value at 89)
================
LB (value at 23 or 34)
DL (value at 23 or 34 or 58)
OG (value at 34 or 49 or 58)
WR (value at 23 or 34 or 49 or 58)
OT (value at 89 or 99)
S (value at 34 or 49)
CB (value at 89 or 99)

I also don't put CB that high on my list right now - especially not if we add Bodden like you hypothesize, but even as we are right now. A future starting S and OLB seem to be our most urgent needs, with OL, DL SILB and WR following after. I put all of those ahead of CB, somewhat like you.

My personal preferences:

- S: Sean Smith or Louis Delmas, with Patrick Chung and Will Moore also getting serious consideration
- OLB: Connor Barwin first and foremost, with Aaron Maybin, Clay Matthews, Clint Sintim and Larry English also getting consideration
- SILB: Robert Ayers, Clint Sintim, or Larry Matthews (probably in that order). I'm not high on Maualuga, and certainly not on Laurinaitis or Cushing.
- OL: William Beatty as a LT prospect would be my first choice, with Alex Mack and Eric Woods as interior lineman on the 1st day, and Trevor Canfield in the 3rd round.
- WR: Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Britt or Brian Robiskie on the first day, or Mike Wallace on the 2nd day. Possibly Percy Harvin if he fell.
- DL: Jarron Gilbert is the only 1st day pick I would consider, unless BJ Raji fell by a miracle (my favorite player in the draft, even above Aaron Curry). I'd love Sammie Lee Hill in the late 3rd/early 4th round as a "poor man's Raji" (similar athleticism, less polished).

I like Bodden but don't like Jason Taylor. I'm still holding out some hope for Julius Peppers, though I doubt it will happen.

S I would include Rashad Johnson; isn't he 2nd or 3rd round quality?
DL What about Evander Hood in the 2nd or 3rd?

Agreed - CB need is somewhat diminished in the short term. The need may be there in the long term, but if Springs is as good [when healthy] as reported, than we have the time to see if Wheatley/Wilhite pan out.

That said, if the BPA is a CB at any given spot, they should pull the trigger. As long as we shore up OLB w some stopgap vet (J. Taylor), then the only true glaring short term need is SILB (arguable, as we're hopeful Guyton is the answer, I'm personally hoping AD would play some time there, but less likely w the Vrabes trade), and then I would essentially see them going into the draft basically w the freedom to basically take BPA throughout.

Considering the number of picks we have in this draft, I would definitely be in favor of taking a day one CB as long as that player is the BPA in what ever draft slot we are in. I not would expect that player to start this year, but it would be nice to have a potential starter in the waiting for 2010 if Ellis Hobbs is looking for Asante Samuels money.

You are presuming

1) a new CBA conract (otherwise we have Hobbs)

2) That we don't have two 2010 starters among Wheatley, Wilhite and Springs.

Could you educate me on why this would be the case? Would he be a RFA?

2) That we don't have two 2010 starters among Wheatley, Wilhite and Springs.

- I am very high on Wheatly and I fully expect him to be a starting caliber CB talent wise.

- He played fine as a rookie last year, but I'm not yet willing to annoint Wihite as a starting CB in 2010.

- What are the chances of Springs staying healthy through 2010?

Under the current CBA, Hobbs would be an RFA in 2010.

At #23 I want BPA. You have to maximize value when you're committing that kind of $.

My personal 1st round draft board would look something like this:

A) Larry English - LB
B) Darius Butler - CB
C) Sean Smith - S
D) Darrius Heyward-Bey - WR

Ok, so do you think there's a plausible scenario in which we add Bodden AND Springs?

That with Hobbs and the W-Men seems like the CB area of the field is filled. Add in camp fodder and you're off to the races.

Doing that while adding Taylor or even Peppers (which likely erases a pick) certainly makes drafting the BPA easier.

Apparently you ahve found some way around the cap. Perhaps you should give us you list of cuts.

If we've found a way to circumvent the cap then I want to update my offseason plan.
