Something to watch:

The NFL's Proven Performance Escalator applies to players drafted in rounds 3 through 7 of the 2011 and later drafts.

It increases the player's base salary in year 4 to that of the lowest RFA tender if a player:
  • plays 35% of snaps on offense or defense (as the player's position dictates) in two of his first three seasons, or
  • averages 35% of all snaps over the first three seasons.
Remember that Jones was claimed off waivers, so his original rookie contract (as a fifth-rounder) is still in effect.

Because of Wilfork's and Kelly's injuries, there was about a six-week period where Jones played wire to wire on defense; as a result, he nearly doubled the 35% bar last year, playing about 65% of defensive snaps.

This year, with Wilfork back, Jones' workload has been reduced, but is still well over the 35% bar (at about 46%).

At this point, barring a major change in fortunes, it seems likely that Jones will become the second Patriot (after Alfonzo Dennard) to earn the PPE; it'll make his base salary in 2016 on the order of $1.5 million.

Stork should become the 3rd Patriot in 2017

Cool for him. I always hope players make as much money as they can
