Originally there had been reports that they were not going to tender him and thus allow him to be unrestricted. Instead they applied the 1st and 3rd tender on him today.

Call him what you want, but he's a hell of a player. Devin Hester-caliber returner, plus game-changing explosiveness coming out of the backfield. Not an every down RB, but then again who is these days?

A 1st and a 3rd tender? Maybe they realized it was unwise to have NO heir apparent to the RB position. Perhaps they also thought - we don't want to HAVE to use our 1st round pick on a RB.
