While failure to learn the playbook may have have contributed to his failure of a season in New England, it certainly wasn't the only reason. A big reason in my opinion is Johnson was more physically past his prime than people thought. He was 33, his legs were declining and he couldn't gain separation anymore. He had declining stats in 2010 before joining New England and Just look at his stats after he left New England in 2012 he never produced again. Failure to learn the playbook was just icing on the cake.

While he was past his prime and had clearly lost a few steps the guy looked positively lost every time he was on the field. He even looked lost on the sideline after getting benched. I'm not sure he would have succeeded in the Patriots system even when he was in his prime.

If all you can do is know exactly where to sit in zone coverage and catch balls thrown to you, you could gain 400 yards a season in this offense.
