Quick practice notes
July 28th, 2007
I made it for the last 20 minutes of practice to a huge ovation and while I didn’t get a great feel for things, here are a few notes:
Brandon Meriweather was lined up primarily as the slot corner during the time I was there, covering Wes Welker. It was the rookie’s first day on the field but let’s just say: advantage Welker.
Randall Gay was playing corner opposite Ellis Hobbs. It looks like with Chad Scott out, Gay is first in line to see more playing time.
My favorite player in the NFL is Adalius Thomas. Kevin Faulk is arguably the best practice player in the league. What I mean by that is Faulk cuts on a dime and is so quick that he’s almost impossible for defenders to cover in the open field without contact. I saw Thomas cover Faulk twice today and he stuck to him like glue. If the Ravens have better defensive players than this guy, I would love to see them.
Jabar Gaffney continued to impress, making three tough catches in traffic. One was a beautiful reception along the sideline, where Gaffney fully extended for the ball while keeping his feet in bounds. Brady seems to be looking No. 10’s way a lot early in training camp.
Tom Brady and Matt Cassel still look rusty throwing the ball. I’m obviously not concerned about Brady, especially since he started training camp off slow last year, but Cassel better pick it up soon. In my opinion, Cassel still holds onto the ball way too long. A lot of his plays in practice would be sacks in a game. I think that’s one reason why he scrambles around a lot in preseason but I would like to see him get rid of the ball and make quicker decisions now that he’s in his third year.
I promise to back for both practices tomorrow blogging like crazy. I’m showing up four hours early and bringing three batteries with me. Thanks to all you for understanding that the world is being taken over by country music, and there isn’t a darn thing any of us can do about it.
