Slater talks role, Reggie Bush - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

From Reading this interview, dude reminds me of one of my favorite all time Patriots, and I don't mean Irving Fryar...

If anyone would look good wearing #80, it would be Slater...

"That’s really not up to me; Whatever the coaches want me to do, whatever they ask of me, that’s what I’m willing to do," said Slater. "Like I’ve said since Day 1, I’m just here to do a job, and that job is what the coaches ask me to do. If that means putting my hand on the ground and playing offensive line, that’s what I'm going to try to do. I’m just excited about the opportunity to help this team win games."

I'll take "Things Troy Brown would say" for 500, Alex

There could not be a better teacher for Slater to play offensive line than his legendary dad Jackie....at 57 Jackie could still be better than many of today's players

Only problem is Matt would have to buy a copy of Rex Ryan's book on how to stuff as many calories in your mouth on a daily basis as humanly possible and gain lots of pounds.

it is actually AH

we should start a #81 Aaron Hernandez thread he is the REAL 81

Moss is old news. I would welcome him back only if we LOSE a WR.

I use to be like that until I saw the new Slater WR that looks pretty darn good. He is a viable option now.

I know that you are joking Bruinz

With the new kick off rules, I don't know how it works out this year. That said...

People who I trust have told me that on special teams he is a good blocker. That sounds like damning with faint praise, but I mean so good it justifies his existence on the team. With the old kick off rules, I mean.

All special teamers are less relevant now, but if teams now go for kick off hang time and try to pin teams inside the 5... I have no idea how that'll work out.

Numbers like 80, 54, and 55 should be retired. I would rather petition that than petition Slater wearing #80.

I hate the concept of retiring numbers. Pretty soon all Patriots linebackers will be forced to wear jersey numbers in the 40s.

I am generally against retiring of numbers in football. It is easier to get away with in baseball where there are fewer players on the team and no restrictions on the use of numbers by position. Even EASIER in basketball.

sorry...

its CAPTAIN Slater

(Congrats Matthew)

Wasn't Troy cut at one point too?

Yes, their career path is eearily similar, although Slater is a gunner and Bwon is a returner. Donlt think Slater will ever be Troy Brown.....but biy, he has his work ethic and attitude...and he's a captain just like Troy was.

All that said, NO ONE SHOUDL EVER WEAR 80 AGAIN! The greatest Patriot - Troy Brown - should be honored by having his number retired. Yadda, yadda, yadda...Bruschi said it's an honor to have someone else wear his number. I call bullsh*t.

I don't advocate a wholesale retirement of numbers. But there are some players who were just special players to the team. Yes, guys like Brown, Bruschi, and McGinest will never sniff Canton without buying a ticket, but they were special players to the Pats and Pats fans during the best era of the Patriots. I don't think every good to great player from the Dynasty era deserve to get their number retired, but there are 4-5 players who were special in fans eyes and it might not even be for their overall talent.

The sad fact the only number from that era that will get retired is # 12. That number should be officially retired the day Brady retires or leaves the Pats. I think a few more should join that club.

When does he start playing nickel corner?
