As practice goes into its second hour. …
– The team went through open-field tackling drills early on, which really aren’t tackling drills, but shadow exercises with a touch blowing the play dead. A good reason for that? How’s this one: QB
Tom Brady was matched up with LB
Adalius Thomas three times. Brady did show some shake, the kind he put on
Brian Urlacher, in trying to get by his new teammate. But in most cases, in a game situation, Brady’d be going to the slide there.

Tory James has worked his way into some reps with the first team, switching in and out early on with
Randall Gay on the left side. And it’s nice to that the Patriots prepare themselves for every circumstance here. But if things come to James starting out there, judging by what happened in Cincinnati last year, there could be trouble.

Garrett Mills, out there for his first full practice of camp today, looks shaky at best. He dropped two well-placed
Matt Cassel offerings and seems to have problems breaking coverage the way he did in minicamp. Mills simply isn’t getting separation in the passing game, and isn’t noted for his blocking. He’s got some work to do to make the team.
– The team did quite a bit of work on screens in 11-on-11s, and that makes sense, too, that it’s being done in a full-gear setting. Those types of plays, where linemen are put in space on the perimeter, are hard to simulate if there’s not at least a little hitting going on.
