Kneeling with the ball is a veteran savvy play, not a hot-shot rookie play.
The knock on him was solely juvenile judgement calls, but in-depth scouting always made points to say he was a field student (as well as a general good-guy, despite).
I say, don't shoot at him or attack his friends, and watch him solidify our d-backfield.
