I respect your thoughts but think of Irving Fryar only in reverse. The Pats could not get rid of him because he did some exasperating things like get knifed by his wife before a Pats game, snort the night before the NCAA Championship Bowl game at Miami ....before we Drafted him! He made a Pro Bowl. We could not get a bite when we had enough. We finally moved him. He straitened out and had four more Pro Bowl seasons and competed on a high level for many years. He also holds some NFL records. It's not just character issues: it's the fact that McDaniels didn't think he was worth the trouble. If there's a coach in the NFL whose perspective on this stuff is aligned with Belichick's, it's McDaniels. So if McD says that he's not worth the trouble, then I'd expect Belichick to conclude the same.
And Marshall had plenty of off-field issues when Shanahan was coach, such as the mysterious hand injury that caused him to miss a bunch of time, etc. etc.
Yes it is a gamble, but so is every first round or in fact all NFL Draft choices. The percentage of success is only 18% in this league that a Draft choice will become a long time valuable starter, Pro Bowl type player or high level Team contributor....within a three year time frame. I have said this numerous times and yet some of us believe in our 8 pick (and four comp) Draft we are going to get a homerun on every pick. 18% say two will be very good. Three would be extraordinary. Some of the others will stick on the Team until replaced. I don't want to burst anyone's bubble but lets not say.... "Championship!" even if we have an outstanding Draft at least not this year with so many holes, unless we get some added talent. Three "players" from this Draft would be good.
IMO Marshall is better than any receiver we can get at #22 or the remainder of the Draft at this time. He is a pin head but a proven God given talented commodity. He changes the whole dynamic makeup of the 2010 Patriots team. Tell me one Draft choice out there that you know can do that? None that I can see. He also prepares the Pats for 2011 and a Team without Randy Moss.
His game also resembles Moss. I honestly think that Randy could make him a better player and believe it or not, settle him down. Randy knows "wild".
Yes we need D help. We need a TE. I was torched last week when I said Carriker could be in play (so there). I think Gocong has value for a mid-pack Draft choice (DW torched in 2009, but now.... not a bad idea). Again these are all experienced NFL players. Carriker and Gocong have immense talent but were both miscast by their teams and nicked some. Give me Marshall, Carriker at a 5 technique DE instead of a 4-3 DT and Gocong as an edge rusher OLB at 262 lbs instead of a 4-3 LB and we are ready to add some decent Draft choices.
I hate Marshalls B.S but you cannot deny talent. He changes this team. I can see Marshall as a challenge for a first year young coach like Josh and he had so many other issues like Cutler, when Marshall acted up it was like, oh no not again.
