Probably a (very) dumb question, but is there any reason whatsoever that the Pats would pick Brace then Butler rather than vice versa w/their back to back picks? There's no salary implication, is there? Maybe just alphabetical?

They had to pick somebody first?

LOL i mean does it matter at that point?

I'd leave that call up to the salary negotiation expert -- Reese?

Or flip a coin.

I guess that's exactly my question - does it matter? I'm guessing "no" but I wasn't sure if there was some salary level difference for those 2 positions.

O im sorry i forgot. One parking spot closer, a free beverage (non-alcoholic), and a coupon to go halfs with another player on a pizza.

I'm pretty sure alphabetical order did not enter the decision making process. . . though I do agree, I would have thought Butler would have been drafted prior to Brace. My best guess is that they either had Brace rated higher on the Pats board (perhaps planning ahead to 2010) - as opposed to an NFL board - and then were pleasantly surprised to see Butler still available, and snapped him up later.

I imagine Brace was probably more important to them. It would have been possible for them to pick Brace and then entertain offers for their second pick (when they drafted Butler). They could have picked Brace and then traded their next pick, so they must have valued Brace slightly more than Butler.

That actually makes sense and I had not thought of it. Thanks.

The picks were back-to-back.

I hope that other player isn't Wilfork or they'll be fighting for a piece of crust.

if you notice, they ran the clock down on 40, so I have to think they were working on a deal for something.

either that or arguing amongst themselves which to take first.

I think this is a good analysis of the situation especially when you put it together with what many people say that assuming everything is equal, BB usually values DL or OL above other positions. Perhaps they figured that they really needed a back up NT more than they did a CB since if they traded out of this pick, they probably wouldn't have traded Hobbs

Cornerbacks have big egos.

I love the Brace pick. And Im glad we announced him first rather than Butler just to piss of other 3-4 teams that needed a nose, that in itself is worth it. Ive heard rumors that Miami had him rated as a 1st rounder(probably high on other teams boards as well). That was probably why we traded up with Oakland to get him cus u can bet ur sweet arse that alot of teams called Oakland to try to jump ahead of the Pats to pick Brace.

Obviously it's just my theory but it makes a ton of sense as to why we picked him where we did.

Miami and Denver bot badly needed a NT.

As far as salary goes, the cap space slotted for #40 is slightly higher than #41 (on the order of $20K or so).

If I had to guess, they'll probably get very similar if not identical contracts, at least in terms of rookie SC hits.

You don't waste a pick because other teams want a guy. Denver and Miami may have influenced where they picked him, but they (the Pats)clearly felt he was borderline 1st talent.

If you draft the little guy first, the big guy might take it personally and eat him?

The Pats wanted Brace and knew he wouldn't last to their spot at 47. So they traded up for him. What is the issue?

The issue I have is someone insinuating that they drafted him entirely to keep Miami or Denver from getting him. They drafted him because they thought value was there, period.
