RB Blount takes pay cut in trade - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Blount was scheduled to earn $1.2 million in base salary with the Buccaneers in 2013, with additional bonus money, but the deal was slashed to $630,000 with the Patriots (and is reduced to $358,000, via a split, if he lands on injured reserve).

Blount can also earn a $50,000 workout bonus in New England.
Blount actually took a pay cut on joining the Patriots, down to partially-guaranteed vet minimum.

I think we can agree his next contract -- whether it's with the Patriots or another team -- will be somewhat more generous than that.

I really like this kid. I hope he keeps his head on straight. 3 years at 2 mill. with plenty of incentives.

He gave the O-line plenty of credit. He seems to like it here. I think so long as he is happy he'll remain focused.

If you liked what you saw yesterday, then we need to keep Blount, Wendell and Hooman.

If we sign Blount, is Ridley trade bait? I'm guessing we lose Blount and Spikes. Probably Wendell too. Want to keep Talib and Edelman.

too early, sorry OP...still enjoying this year!!

Blount just turned 27 in early December.

I would love to sign him to a 3 or 4 year deal and make him the feature back.

Make Ridley earn the job back.

I know small sample size, but the last few games Blount has run better than Ridley ever has.

I think Blount and Talib would have to take less than market value to stay together on the same team here. They would rather draft or sign an undrafted rookie free agent RB than sign Blount to a long-term contract, just look at Green-Ellis and Woodhead as examples.

Not to rain on the parade; Blount has been a beast. But, if any team wants to pay him to be a starting RB, he's free to leave. Ridley has proven to be a good starting system RB and we'd have Vereen/Bolden as depth.

This draft is full of interesting RBs that could help our RBBC too.

22 year old rookie RB making 600k a year>27 year old RB making 4-5 million a year.

This pound the rock 40 times offense shows the greatness of BB adapting to available personnel. But don't kid yourselves, with a healthy Gronk, a healthy Amendola, the rookie WR trio getting another offseason, and a potential 1st round TE, the passing attack will return.

Blount's age make the negotiations with him a challenge. Because he is 27 and the shelf-life of RBs is not a lot, he may look at achieving financial security as his main goal as opposed to a place he can call home and be successful. The question is, can the Pats can get close to numbers that are competitive in the market? Who knows...

His next contract is likely to prove a large fraction of Blount's career earnings. He needs to go for the money, of course being sensitive to any real-vs.-fake contract value issues that may arise.

I agree. So many unknowns right now. With his coming out party do they intend on paying him to carry the ball 250-300 times a year or still view him as a 150-200 carry guy. That'll dictate the contract size (signing bonus) and length and that'll drive how many years they can spread out the singning bonus. Cap space and other priorities will also influence how they approach negotiations with him. His age does help the situation as because he is 27, not a lot of wear and tear and has assuming 2-3 prime years left, if the singing bonus is in the ballpark Blount has a home here in New England.

I really hope Talib and Blount sit down and take stock of how great their time has been here.

I want them both to stay, and if given the choice ill take blount over ridley.

blount has proven he can do long runs, while maintaining the moving of the chains.

Ridley cant seem to break anything off for much longer then 20 yards. Blount also looks like the faster runner, and returns kicks. more diversity = more likely to stay.

I've never been a big fan of our hybrid running back core before Blount, and after the upteenth time of me seeing Shane Vareen drop that same pass, I would be ok to let him go in favor of paying more to keep Blount. I like my RB's old school. Big, fast bruisers.

Pay Blount. He's earning it.

Indeed he has, and he knows it.

Love what Blount has brought to this team but there's a good chance he signs elsewhere even if it may not be in his best interests. Much as I hate to say it i think the Jets will make a hard run at him and they love to overpay.

Umm Vereen is still on his rookie deal. We won't be letting him go because he makes peanuts and plays a valuable 3rd down role.

The Pats will have to seriously evaluate their roster to see where they need to trim the fat. And also consider how much they want to pay Blount to keep him. If he will take BJGE money, I'm all for it.

But also remember we need to re-up Talib. And I consider him a bigger priority going forward if he will take reasonable money instead of 'break the bank' money.
