Patriots' Week 17 loss to Dolphins costs one bettor nearly $75K

The money line for those who aren't familiar with SportsBooks is the simplest bet on the board and with the Patriots a huge favorite at home in a must win game it seemed almost like free money......... Almost

The bettor would have cashed in $4,600 in winnings had the Patriots decided to actually show up on sunday at home

Goes to show you - NOTHING is a sure thing other than Death and Taxes .... not even the Patriots at home anymore

Horrible bet...a lot of people thought this game was going to at least competitive. Obviously this is hindsight, but the 17 point spread made no sense, considering the Patriots haven’t really blown out a team besides Cincinnati since October. Dolphins were 4-4 in their previous eight games coming in. I thought the spread was really high because the Dolphins might be pulling starters early and going with Rosen and some backups to test them out, but if I’d known starters were playing, I’d put the game at something like Patriots -8 to -10. The money line lines up with the spread and both were clearly bloated.

Huge factor here is that former coaches are 12-12 vs Belichick, Dolphins have played close to the Pats level (mediocre, point differential close to even) for quite a while. This is more of on the fluke side, but the Dolphins record against the Patriots the second time (after losing game 1) is something absurdly out of whack.

But the spread had NOTHING to do with this bet - the Money line is just picking the team to win - whether its by 17 or 1 point - only few people outside of the Dolphins fan core thought it would happen - but with that being said to put up $75,000 to win $4,600 is not the smartest bet - I would have done a parlay with that kind of cash and spread out the huge bet.

Yeah but what I’m saying is the money line and spread are married together. I’m just using the 17 points to illustrate how big a favorite the Pats were as opposed to what they should have been, as it is easier to illustrate it then using the -1600 money line. Maybe if the Patriots were 10 point favorites the money line is around -700 or so? Risk:reward is very different with there.

Yep - Like this week if you put $75,000 on the Patriots with the money line in a 5 point spread you probably win $15,000 or near that - But I would not trust this Patriots team with a flaccid offense and a tired looking defense even with a $20 bet

I was driving from VA to TX and forgot to bet on the Pats.

Thank you, Lord Satan, for looking out for me.

Vegas was trapped into thinking of the first meeting

Is there a nice story about the lucky SOB who bet on the Dolphins for that game?

Ah the fools gold of low odds betting. What could possibly go wrong ?

FWIW, the money line my book has NE at is -240. A $75,000 wager pays $31,250.
