Apparently a conversation between Antonio Brown and his agent Drew Rosenhaus during the trade saga was released on Brown's podcast. Pats were in on it, and Brown was very happy about it.
Patriots showed interest in trading for Antonio Brown and Steelers were willing to deal

Interested teams besides the Raiders and Bills were the Patriots, Eagles and Titans.

The Raiduhs won't be able to win another SB until 2027. I put a 25 year curse on them in 2001 and it's working perfectly. The only time they made it to the SB was the year after my curse and they got destroyed. They haven't been close since.

It’s sad listening to Antonio Brown here... we think these players know everything and are basically clairvoyant, but they are just as lost in the mix as a forum poster.

Rosenhaus seems like a guy everyone would want as their agent. It’s not surprising he’s so successful.

My guess is this is the Patriot way in this context:

-Take note that the market for Brown has become severely depressed and the Steelers increasingly desperate. Gone from “at least a first round pick” to a mid round pick and continuing to fall as the sound of his name is rumored to cause leprosy.

-Talk to the Steelers about a potential low ball offer (from their value standpoint) which is still the highest on the market.

-If that had worked, try to talk Brown into keeping the same contract for 2019, adding in a few impossible incentives to boost his ego. Allure him with revenge on Big Ben/Steelers and try to stroke his ego to get th deal done.

-If that had worked, just figure he’s worth that draft compensation by playing just four games anyway, let alone an entire season, so everything else is just gravy.

I think that is the key part where any potential deal would have fallen apart. I doubt very much that AB would have gotten any substantial pay raise out of a trade to the Pats. And if you read about how obsessed he is with money and how it equals respect in his mind there was no way he would have played the contract out with some added incentives on top.

Anyone who thinks this trade fell apart because of the draft picks offered by the Raiders is betting on the wrong horse. This was about the additional guaranteed money, imo.

We are supposed to believe Drew Rosenhaus when he says that the Steelers were willing to trade AB to the Patriots?

It was supposed to be a private conversation between Brown and Rosenhaus. He doesn’t serve his client well if he blatantly lies to Brown about something like that.

Maybe we can abandon the myth of "the Patriots strategically choose not to devote resources to WR because they don't value the position?" After the attempts at Brown, Humphries and Tate, and the only past trades of high draft picks for vets being for WRs, it's pretty clear that they're willing to devote resources, if not always able.
