I agree. Thats quite a staff Gibbs has with Saunders as the OC and Greg Williams as the DC.

Don't be so sure. They have huge cap issues that need to be resolved - http://www.washtimes.com/sports/20060117-115943-8513r.htm - and they have no 1st or 4th round pick because of the trade they made last year with the Broncos to get the Extra #1 last year (they took QB Campbell).

Saunders is a very good choice for Washington. He knows how to get the most out of the players he has and how to attack defenses. He makes the QBs look better because he streamlines the reads they have to make. This was an excellent addition for Washington

Cap problems. Maybe that's why Snyder is paying so much to great coaches. They'll coach the crap out of their players from here on out.

One of the few things about the Patriots organization that worries me ... is that they give the appearance ... of keeping a tight lid on total costs of the coaching staff. (One cannot KNOW that, of course ... but it is a persistent background murmur.)

Good business people try hard not to overpay for anything. "Get it for free - or better!" is a motto of one entrepreneur-turned-business professor whom i highly esteem. Bob Kraft seems to be of this school.

He shouldn't be. His franchise grosses some of the highest revenues in the NFL. His labor costs are essentially the same as all his competitors'. He ought to plow back much of the "premium" portion of those revenues ... into the uncapped areas - as he partly does (training facilities, staff catering, stadium, etc.). Never should we lose a desired coach because of the money. Professional advancement, change of scenery, whatever. But not because of money.

When you shell out that kind of dough, and borrow that kind of dough, it's requires the organization to make a profit because you never know when you could be back to the good old days of 33,000 fans at Schaefer Stadium. Time In: Hats off to Kraft ... for not trying to stick the taxpayers with paying for his money machine ... like the rest of the owners demean themselves to do. The NFL certainly is a blazing example of Socialism For The Rich.

But don't make the mistake of assuming that Gillette Stadium ... even with its substantial debt ... is any kind of a drag on the Kraft family balance sheet. It is an appreciating asset, entirely owned by themselves, which EASILY earns its financing costs each year. He drives that asset! The equity in the stadium ADDS TO his fiscal well-being ... putting him still further ahead of his brother-owners. Kraft ownership of The Razor only reinforces my point.

Keeping the very best coaching staff that money can buy ... also is the key to sustaining competitive excellence between the goalposts. Paying what it may take to attract and retain the best ... is an investment ... not running a charity. Or don't you get what you pay for?

P.S. But if they aren't the best, of course don't pay them as if they were!

I agree with your good point how paying for the best coaching staff helps protect value.
