Figured I'd take a look back at teams that have won 2 Super Bowls (not NFL Championships) and compare what they did in that 3rd year.

Super Bowls I and II - Green Bay - did not make playoffs (factor in no wildcards until 1978)

Super Bowls VII and VIII - Miami - lost to Oakland in Div. playoffs 28-26

Super Bowls IX and X - Pittsburgh - lost to Oakland in AFC Championship 24-7

Super Bowls XIII and XIV - Pittsburgh - did not make playoffs

Super Bowls XXIII and XXIV - San Francisco - lost to Giants in NFC Championship 15-13

Super Bowls XXVII and XXVII - Dallas - lost to San Francisco in NFC Championship 38-28

Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII - Denver - did not make playoffs

Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX - New England - 3peat?

The one in bold is the closest any team came, so far...if Roger Craig doesn't fumble when the 49ers were trying to run out the clock...

Nice research, PatsRI.

Nice work. Hopefully the Pats can make history here, too.

And in each instance where the 3 peat was killed in the conference championship, the winner went on to win the super bowl
