A balanced column from The Buffalo News -- yeah they cheated, that's scummy, but they're better than everybody else regardless, and now they're PISSED too, lucky us.
"Look, I don’t advocate spying. Belichick is lucky he didn’t get suspended. But show the Pats a little respect. Roger Goodell can gather all the notes and videotape he wants. It won’t change the fact that Belichick is the best coach of his generation and Brady is the best player in the league. It certainly makes them more determined to prove it. "
The usual covert bias that is the hallmark of the NYT. Look at the sources; Jets, Jets, Jets, "unnamed league official", one weak pro-Pats coach, two strong anti-Pats coach's, and, to top it off, the bitter Charley Casserly. Casserly should be described NOT simply as the "former Texan's GM", but as the "man who destroyed the Redskins franchise, run out of town as the Texans GM, and now serves as a talking head for CBS (see-BS) sports.
Notice how, despite talking to all these Jets sources, the main question is never asked - "Did the Jets tip off the league ?" Any honest reporter not in the tank for the home team would ask that question. Or perhaps she did. Just the truth isn't in the the article.
That's called - lying by omission. Another hallmark of the NYT.
Yes, but everyone knows they are biased - and they don't hide it.
The NYT pretends that they are objective, and that they are privy to a "higher truth" than the rest of us mere mortals. When in reality they are no different - just slicker in the delivery of their propaganda.
Bruce Allen, the chap who created Boston Sports Media Watch
has what may be the most comprehensive, balanced assessment yet.
Edited excerpt:
The media might be the group that actually brought the most shame upon themselves. Has everyone lost their minds? This was among the most disgraceful displays of over-the-top media coverage that we have witnessed here locally in some time. Let's just say that when Dennis & Callahan, Sean Salisbury, Stephen A Smith and Scoop Jackson are your voices of reason, then something is seriously wrong. Some out there said that the Jets game should be forfeited. We had people suggesting that because of this incident, the league should strip the Patriots of their Super Bowl titles. We had people suggest the Patriots be banned from the playoffs this season. We had some insist that Bill Belichick be suspended for not only part of the regular season, but also for part of the playoffs. We had national columnists writing negative columns about Belichick that were so over-the-top that it was an embarrassment to the profession. The list went on and on and on. News reporters who wouldn't know a double reverse from a double latte descended upon Gillette Stadium to insist that the coach answer, explain and apologize for all that he had done.
The Patriots might not have covered themselves in glory by getting caught filming the Jets coaches, but they were by no means alone in making fools of themselves in this entire episode.
