Randy Moss and Joey Galloway, who were not present for the morning practice, were on the field and fully participated in this afternoon's session, which was held under sunny skies, in stark contrast to this morning's dark clouds and storm.

* In one-on-one work, rookie Darius Butler had good coverage on Randy Moss, but Moss made the catch over Butler; Gary Guyton slipped against Kevin Faulk, making it easy for the veteran to pull in the pass.
* The JUGS machine was used during kickoffs, likely to save Stephen Gostkowski's leg. On returns, pairings included Laurence Maroney and Faulk, Wes Welker and Maroney, and Greg Lewis and Terrence Nunn.
* In 11-on-11 work, a pretty trick play was pulled off between Brady and Galloway; Brady looked to Moss on the left sideline with Leigh Bodden in coverage, but the ball was a bit underthrown and Bodden was able to tap it away; David Thomas made a nice one-handed, spinning catch in the middle of the field from Brian Hoyer.
* After the session, Bill Belichick spent some time tossing a ball back and forth with youngest son Brian.
* It was the offensive linemen's turn to sign autographs, though Randy Moss also spent time signing as well.

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots concluded their afternoon practice on the first day of training camp (3:45-5:15). The session was held in full pads on the upper fields behind Gillette Stadium.
Here are some observations from the practice:
1) Leigh Bodden vs. Randy Moss. The presence of Randy Moss was one of the highlights of the afternoon session, and Moss was involved in one of the more noticeable plays of the day. It came in 11 on 11 work, with Moss streaking down the left side as quarterback Tom Brady delivered a high-arcing bomb with cornerback Leigh Bodden in coverage. Bodden had tight coverage on Moss, and turned as the ball arrived, batting it away. Elsewhere at practice, Moss and fellow receiver Joey Galloway worked with quarterbacks as the Patriots focused on special teams on the other field (using a JUGS machine for kickoffs to preserve Stephen Gostkowski's leg).

Quick Kicks: Day 1 ends on a bright note

You can breathe a sigh of relief, Pats fans. Randy Moss, who missed the first practice of training camp 2009 this morning, was on the field for the afternoon session, as was fellow WR Joey Galloway and DL Jarvis Green, both of whom were absent in the a.m.

Other noteworthy observations:
* Backup QB Kevin O’Connell struggled a bit. Some of his throws in team work were off the mark, either too high, too low, or too far from the intended receiver.
* RB Kevin Faulk completely shook second-year LB Gary Guyton during a 1-on-1 receiving drill and made a nice catch to complete the play. Faulk faked a move to his left (outside) shoulder, then ducked inside over the middle of the field. Guyton bit on the fake and wound up trailing Faulk by a good five yards.

– You remember those dudes who didn’t practice during the first session? Most were there in full force for the second session. It seems coach Bill Belichick was resting some old guys. So, Randy Moss, Joey Galloway, and Jarvis Green did their thing in the afternoon.
– On that note, that meant some players took a rest. Linebacker Tedy Bruschi, offensive lineman Matt Light, defensive lineman Richard Seymour and others spent the afternoon playing frisbee on the side. Well, maybe not, but they definitely didn’t practice.
– Moss didn’t exactly, ya know, go unnoticed. He made a bunch of sweet catches off Tom Brady’s long passes during passing drills, though in one standout play in practice, corner Leigh Bodden batted a ball out of his hands. That drew a big groan from most of the crowd, except, like the three people who clapped.
– Brady looked to take several shots down the field, including on that Bodden/Moss play. Not all of the passes were deep enough, though, and maybe Brady is working his arm back into shape. Or maybe it’s just a practice.

Thursday afternoon notes

Some big names returned -- Randy Moss, Joey Galloway and Jarvis Green -- while others disappeared -- Tedy Bruschi, Matt Light, Stephen Neal and Richard Seymour -- but all in all the Patriots put forth a crisp, entertaining afternoon workout to close out Day 1 of training camp.

New special teams coach Scott O’Brien is a hands-on coach to say the least. He was quite active and vocal in both sessions, oftentimes following his troops downfield on kickoff drills in an effort to better view the blocking lanes and fits. As the ball would get kicked, O’Brien would follow one of his inside guys for 10-15 yards while exhorting the players to execute their assignments.
The team spent time during both practices working on kickoffs and several newcomers appeared to be in the mix for spots. Brandon McGowan, Patrick Chung, Edelman, Darius Butler, Alex Smith, Paris Lenon and Herana-Daze Jones all took reps covering kicks on two separate units.
Who’s hot: The tight ends – The Patriots have a bunch and they all made some plays. Thomas turned in a terrific one-handed catch during a team period. Smith fought off some aggressive coverage from Adalius Thomas to secure a pass during one-on-one drills early in the session. Chris Baker, Benjamin Watson and Tyson DeVree also were active in the passing game, making several catches on the day.
Who’s not: Kevin O’Connell – The morning was a wash, literally, given the heavy rains that affected the passing game, but there were no such handicaps this afternoon. O’Connell appeared indecisive and slow with his reads at times while forcing some passes into areas they shouldn’t have gone. One in particular was nearly intercepted when he tried to jam one to a double-covered Baker down the seam.
Play of the afternoon – Little-known wideout Terrence Nunn made an amazing diving catch in the end zone after getting behind Butler on a deep ball.
