San Diego deserved to lose for giving up that many yards on 4th and 29, but they got hosed on both the spot and the respot. Rice's knee was down (and indisputably so) before the 35, yet they spotted the ball just inside the 33. So, the refs are saying that the distance from Rice's knee to his midsection (where the ball was) is 4 feet. That might be right, if Ray Rice was 9 feet tall.

Yes, the spot defied all logic. It was impossible to tell the exact spot because of the camera angles, but it was clear that Rice's knee was down before the 35-yard line, and at that exact time, the ball was just across the 35, maybe to the 34.5 being generous. Simple logic is that Rice's knee is down before the 35, his arms are not outstretched, and he is hunkered over, so there is simply no way that the ball is even a yard past the 35.

The ref gives an unbelievable spot, putting the ball at the 33.5. And that's after reviewing this for about ten minutes.

That was pathetic, and aggravating for Patsfans; no other team seems capable of handing our rivals a major loss. First Jax, then Detroit blows it against Houston, 4 teams could have beaten the Ravens (including us), KC had Denver on the ropes yesterday and failed. It seems the Pats are going to have to do it on their own, which is the way it should be but a little help wouldn't hurt.

On top of the Chargers choking yesterday, the refs totally botched the spot on that stupefying 4th and 29 conversion. Even after 10 minutes of review they still placed the ball almost a yard ahead of where it should have been - short of the first down line. But in terms of that game only, SD didn't deserve to win that way, if you choke on 4th and 29 you almost should be punished for your failure.

They have a tough next five games, all against teams still in the playoff hunt. They play better at home, actually haven't lost at home is quite a while, but I could see them losing any of them the way their offense is playing.

CANNOT BELIEVE the spot on that ball. I usually dont get worked up about officiating because its just a necessary xfactor of every game- but this one was bad. Even Ray Rice sounded shady in his description of the spot after the game http://bit.ly/U7y1K6.

Bad calls that affect game winners are as bad as ties in football. No one wins.

If you look at the replay of the spot at the time when they froze it to show Ray's knees were down you could clearly see the SD defenders foot was just over the 35 (by 6 inches or so), and the ball was partially obscured by the leg. Therefore the ball must have been behind the leg and within a few inches of the 35. The Pats got screwed twice by the refs in games they weren't even playing.

I gotta admit...that last block by Anquan Boldin was absolutely amazing and was the difference in getting to that yard marker,Rice has no chance of making it if Boldin doesn't block that guy.

Refs may be good at lawyer-type stuff, but they're very bad at spatial reasoning.

Probably the example we've discussed the most is the trajectory of the ball that Ben Watson knocked out of Champ Bailey's grip, although I'll confess to finally having forgotten some of the details.

As bad as the spot was the missed block in the back call on Bolden (that injured Weddle btw) was what really ticked me off. Weddle was in position to make a hit at the 40 yd line, 6 yds short of the first down.

We have a chance to catch the Ravens.. although our schedule is not exactly a cake walk with SF and Houston coming to town. I would be shocked if Houston doesn't go 14-2 with their schedule. It feels like we are going to have to win out to secure a first round bye.
