Was he released before or after he retired? I doubt you can release someone who retires, as their salary goes on hold when they retire. This was why when Gronk "un-retired", his salary put them over the cap, so they had to trade him or release someone.

I suppose they could have released him before his official paperwork hit the NFL office, but that would be an odd thing to do.

That's an internet error. Former RB Robert Smith is worth somewhere in the 10M range but there is a billionare by the same name who is worth 10B.
