I was going to put this in the Hernandez thread, but thought it might be worth a thread of its own instead. Richard Hill of Pats Pulpit offers his opinion on what routes each of the Pats WRs and TEs will likely run. Interesting to note that with the exception of Hernandez, he predicts similar routes to be run by both a veteran and young player at each position.

Projected New England Patriots' Receiver Route Trees - Pats Pulpit

I couldn't learn the passing tree with about 10 routes!

My head would explode with learning that

Some commentary by Hill:

Pink Route: 81 and 19. Randy Moss and Brandon Tate. ... Moss and Tate will be asked to run pretty much the exact same routes as a receiver. ... Moss will be the player doing the sideline out routes (the lines towards the sidelines) and Tate will be doing the across the field slant routes.

Orange and Light Purple Route: 83 and 11. Wes Welker and Julian Edelman. ... difference between Welker and Edelman is size. ... the weight allows Edelman to put his body more on the line downfield and in the way of safeties, as opposed to Welker who flourishes on quick passes and YAC with his excellent vision. Therefore, the Orange extension is what I believe Edelman adds to the offense- another possible body down field.

Dark Purple Route: 82 and 87. Alge Crumpler and Rob Gronkowski. Both are large targets ... who know how to block. ... Gronk will be favored in the end zone due to his size.

Blue Route: 85. Aaron Hernandez. ... his downfield speed will make him a better option on the move, so he can use his downhill momentum.

Green and Cyan Route: 84 and 17. Torry Holt and Taylor Price. ... Holt and Price being more utilized to move the chains. Holt will use his experience to catch the ball ... Price will have a slightly bigger route tree than Holt. Price, with his young body, will be asked to run across the field more often to make the big plays and get the first down.

I like the work that he did. Just two thoughts:

1.) I think he has Moss running a few too many comeback routes. He made a great point with Hernandez running few comeback routes because it doesn't play to one of his greatest strengths: his speed. If that's the case, why have Moss run so many when he's even faster, leaner, and it opens him up to hard shots in his back. I'm not saying he won't, but it would keep him healthier if he didn't run as many comeback routes.

2.) He meantioned Torry Holt of less of a finese runner and more of a strength guy. I don't know about that. In St. Louis, he was known for his speed, his crisp routes, and his soft hands. That doesn't sound like David Givens to me. Also, the man is about the same as Moss. He takes good care of his body. Many of the Rams receivers often went down early rather than fight for extra yards. I think his contributions could be significatnly more than we anticipate. If he can grasp the mental aspects of our offense, and show the hustle to really go after the ball, I think he can really push Tate. Yes, Tate was with the first team in the previous camp. But that was a teaching camp and it was only shorts and T-shirts. Let's hope it's a competitive battle in camp.

From Sideline to Slideline,
Sid
