Another example of why politicians should steer clear of sports, despite the appeal of free face time on television. Apparently the mayor of Minneapolis found himself defending whether or not former rival Brett Favre was a good fit for the Vikings. In an attempt to to make his point he decided to compare and contrast him to Randy Moss.

Rybak goes overboard with Moss bashing by Mark Craig of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune
"I think there are some times when a fit just doesn't work with the team anymore. Like Randy Moss may be the greatest receiver anywhere around, but I don't want that guy to ever come back into the city of Minneapolis again. He was a jerk when he was here, and, uh, Brett wasn't a jerk when he was over there. There's a different deal, but sometimes fits don't work in football. So, hey, he fits beautifully here and we are happy to take him."

It's one thing for the drunk at the end of the bar to say this. It's another for the mayor to go on TV and say it.

Moss wasn't an angel, but let's not go overboard in making him out to be Public Enemy No. 1. Let's also not forget that because of Moss, the Vikings became relevent in Minneapolis again. Because of Moss, the city's Metrodump started selling out again. In fact, it's no accident that the current streak of sellouts began when Moss was drafted in 1998.

I guess "Raaaacist!!!" would be the term of the day

I live in Minneapolis and I gotta say there are some people that are under the false belief that Moss is this really awful guy. Most of them appreciate him for his greatness on the field and wish he would not have been traded (especially considering they ended up taking Troy Williamson 7th overall with the choice acquired from Oakland). But other than squirt a ref with a water bottle, have an overblown incident with a traffic cop and occasionally loaf on the field, he never caused trouble here. Zero arrests. Zero suspensions. Zero teammates that ever bad-mouthed him.

That might be strategic. Moss has been gone for 5 years. However, ex-Minnesota players didn't kill the Sox or Celtics.

The Vikings are in the final phase of trying for a new stadium. What better way to spark a frenzy than to start trash talking the superstar they will face in the Super Bowl (if they can get to the Super Bowl).

Besides, can anyone in the 31 other ****** cities lose by bad mouthing our team?

If the are looking for reasons to give us great players, I've been hearing awful things about Adrian Peterson too!

I see your point to a degree, but I don't see at all how that helps a stadium cause. Also, not to be too semantic, I wouldn't say they are in the final phase. The Twins and U of Minnesota football were on the agenda before them, and the Vikings have been trying to be heard for years in those sessions. I think last year and this year are really the first times that they have had the attention of the state legislators.

Moss doesn't like losing. I wanted the Pats to get him because we are a winning team and that would prevent his bad side from coming out. However, a player who doesn't play well because his team isn't "good enough" isn't the best team player. Part of being a player is taking the L and working for the W.
M0$$ is still the man though.

So in the month or so that Favre has been in Minnesota, he has been a good soldier. Comparing that to eight years on a team that seemed to not be interested in winning anything. Let's see if Favre is still a great guy if the Vikings lose a few games and he throws 4-5 INTs in that timeframe and people are blaming him for the losses.

We should take up a collection and donate it to the mayor's re-election opponent.

Shut up Rybak. Just shut up.

There have been a few articles (Jerry Jones comment) stating they are in the "final" phase. If that's true, I can't say. Still, the best time to get support and funding, is when passion is at it's highest.

My guess is that a new stadium would garner more support today than on July 15th.

I would be nice to see the Pats and Vikings meet in the Super Bowl because we all know what that outcome would be.

I think that this is a good time to introduce the yawn smiley.

I'll see if Ian will add this to the list.

What ever happened to the Put the "pistol in my mouth or to my temple smiley". If i remember right a lot of people liked that one but it never got added. I would use that one quite often.
