So, next year, it seems that we will have some free agents, important ones that make this defense really really good. Now, I know its a little early, but I've overheard people (friends, coworkers and even callers on radio stations) saying the team is setting up the defense for life AFTER Brady but I'm not sure they've checked next year's cap hits. Specifically, with the defense.

1. Hightower has a 12M cap hit.
2. Gilmore has almost a 19M cap hit
3. Patrick Chung will be close to a 6M cap hit
4. Jonathan Jones will be a 6M cap hit
5. Jason McCourty also has close to a 6M cap hit

So, ideally I think they want to bring J. Collins back for a longer term, right? He's been amazing.
Devin McCourty is also a UFA next year. At 32 years old, not sure if he comes back or not.
Kyle Van Noy is also a UFA next year and we know he's gonna want to get paid! He's been too good.

To me personally, we are gonna lose some folks. Who does Bill let go, restructure or resign? He has some work to do and decisions to make. Just wanted your input.

If Bill wants to he can sign all of them back for reasonable deals. He can backload a lot of contracts given that our major expenditures at QB will end in the next 2-3 years at the latest.

In the end it will be the usual question of what the market offers up vs. BB's evaluation. Not sure cap space is that problematic if you look at how much flexibility comes with the design of contracts.

To me the interesting question is how the new CBA plays into it all.

moving on from cannon, chung, gostkowski, and burkhead will save 16M

Well we have the fragile Derek Rivers for one more year yikes a whopping two tackles to his credit in three years.:D

You have no idea the meticulousness of BB and his staff. Nobody does. If we've weighed the possibility of the cap, we can rest assured that THEY already have.

Hightower and Gilmore
ain't taking no paycuts they are both still in the prime of their careers. I don't know how Jonathan Jones made your list:confused: now Jason McCourty I can understand. That said both Collins and Van Noy are must haves they would keep this current D at this same level.

Meticulous Bill has been been operating in the WR market like a desperate crack whore

High possible 7-8 players who are playing 40% or more snaps this year could be gone in 2020.

tremendous roster turnover next year.

No problem... switch back to high octane offense with Gronk and AB!!!!

...whew... that was close...

IMO, the key part is Brady's deal. I think this time we should do a solid two year deal w/ Brady to get his average annual value as low as possible.

Then from there we rebuild the team again. We might lose some defensive firepower, but pick up offensive firepower....

Collins and van noy are going to be tough to keep imo, hope im wrong... but im preparing for at least one to be gone and Bentley stepping in. Considerable downgrade but hopefully its just one spot . Dmc id imagine can be back for reasonable. Assuming no cuts/trades should have mostly a repeat of this years d.

Jason McCourty
Devin McCourty
Patrick Chung
Kyle van Noy
Jamie Collins
Danny Shelton
Adam Butler
Elandon Roberts

all could be not on the 2020 Patriots for different reasons.

IF bb decides to cut or trade some of those. As it stands we have around 50m in cap space and the main fa’s that are key contributors on D are dmc, van noy, collins, butler, shelton. Id love to be able to keep dmc and one each of the lbs and dts. Obviously in this era its not possible to keep a defense like this completely together very long but Im not sure the turnover needs to be THAT drastic.

I fear the same re KVN & Collins. I suspect Collins would be the one to go, since he’s already shown a penchant for « getting paid » and his play will be enticing to many teams. KVN should appeal to all former NE coaches out there. He’s the one I’m hoping they keep.

Why not?

Unless JMaC takes cut, seems like JC is the starter in 2020. Jones just signed, he’s in. Maybe they restructure or move on from Chung.

Will they find a better player than Chung for 1,4M?

They are in good shape. They don't need to cut JMac, Hightower or any player ...
