Good Morning, Ladies and Gents...

I humbly and quietly offer this Thread ~ the 5th of many, as I'll be circumnavigating the entire Roster ~ to my Fellow Patriots Fans ~ KoolAid Soaked Homers + Bile Soaked Haters, alike!! ~ as a Gathering Place ~ a common reference ~ for Running Back Prospects.

***

HB Trent Richardson of Alabama ~ 5.11/225

Even last year, when Mark Ingram was, far and away, the consensus first Tail Back expected to be drafted...

Those who who knew what was going on said he wasn't even the best Tail Back on the team.

Trent Richardson is, indeed, The Complete Package.

***

Between the Tackles, he is a devastating, demolishing, WRECKING Ball.

Outside the Tackles, he is an elusive, explosive BEAST.

He is a savage, vicious, MAULING Blocker.

And he is a deadly threat as a Receiver.

I simply don't know who I can compare him to.

I only know that he is destined for Greatness.

Super Beast!!

***

HB Doug Martin of Boise State ~ 5.09/210

Doug Martin brings an intoxicating fusion of Core Strength, Explosiveness, and Agility to the table.

He can absolutely blast it between the Tackles, and he can also be effective OutSide.

Most importantly of all, he's got the Core Strength, the Core Flexibility, the Fluidity, and the Lateral Agility to consistently be a threat to go through you or around you.

That is powerfull.

He's a usefull Receiver.

But he's an awful Blocker.

However, all agree he's got tremendous Work Ethic, and those guys can always learn how to Block.

All in all, Martin's an outstanding Runner, a solid Receiver, and should develop into a decent Blocker. His Market Value seems to be about the 3rd Round or so, and I'd consider that to be a damned good investment.

Stud Horse!!

***

HB Isaiah Pead of Cincinnati ~ 5.11/200

Isaiah Pead doesn't have the greatest Core Strength in the world, so he's definitely not going to be your Hard Yard Masher or Pile Mover. He brings sufficient Fluidity and Lateral Agility to the table, but nothing special.

But he does command exceptional Long Speed, and can get to the Edge in an hurry.

He could use some improvement as a Blocker.

But he's effective in the Passing Game as a Receiver.

All in all, Pead's an O Back with some Talent and some weaknesses, and should give you your money's worth at his 3rd or 4th Round Market Value.

Role Player!!

***

HB Cyrus Gray of Texas A&M ~ 5.10/200

Cyrus Gray is simply an outstanding O Back Prospect.

He brings excellent Core Strength and Core Flexibility to the table, and employs exceptional Lateral Agility, Fluidity, and Ricochet to consistently hit the holes that are there, and to create, when they aren't.

He commands superior Diagnostic Acuity and Processing Speed, and the Patience to work with his Linemen and wait for the Blocks to develop.

He's a ferocious, motivated Blocker, and a good one.

He also gets good grades as an emerging Receiving threat.

His best attribute is his attitude, however, as all agree his is an awesome, team-first team mate with a tremendous Work Ethic...and yet his Market Value is floating somewhere around the 4th Round or so!!

Sleeper Stud Horse!!

***

HB Daniel Herron of Ohio State ~ 5.10/208

Dan Herron is a solid, tough Runner who employs superior Core Strength and sufficient Lateral Agility and Fluidity to make his fair share of Tacklers miss.

He gets good grades for improving Processing Speed and Diagnostic Acuity, showing increasing Patience to let his Linemen develop their Blocks.

He does get divergent grades on Blocking, which speaks to inconsistency.

And he gets decent grades as a Receiver.

All told, Dan Herron looks like a good Back to have, one who'll pretty reliably Move the Chains.

His Market Value looks like the 4th - 5th Round range, currently, and that looks about right to me.

Role Player!!

Notes

1 ~ In my opinion, we have the greatest Depth of Talent in our BackField in Patriots History...And I was there for those extraordinary BackFields of the late 70's and mid 80's...Even so, circumstances could change, and in any case: there's no harm in looking!!

2 ~ It's no secret that Trent Richardson is an exceptional Prospect, but I consider him absolutely PHENOMENAL: The best looking Back out of college since Adrian Peterson...and for MY money, I'll take Richardson.

3 ~ Gotta love Cyrus Gray, too.

4 ~ The reason there are so few Backs at the outset of this Thread is that most of the best ones are Juniors, which means there isn't sufficient reporting on them, as yet, to triangulate my position.

5 ~ A few names of interest to me, at this early juncture, are Cyrus Gray, Andre Ellington, Jeff Demps, and Christopher Rainey.

Historically the single most important thing that BB has cared about in RB's is ball security.

Given that I was a bit shocked that BB took two RBs in the last draft that were known to put the ball on the turf.

However I do like Ridley and Vereen a lot and if they can give Green Ellis a chance to heal up over these next five weeks, so much the better, because we will need a healthy Green Ellis running very hard in the playoffs.

Thanks for the usual great effort OTG, but if the Pats are even CONSIDERING a running back this draft I know I'll be pissed. He have a very nice stable of promising young RBs all UNDER 30, in BJGE, Woody, Vareen, and Ridley. If Bill thinks we need a 5th RB to replace Faulk, then I'd much rather he find him in FA. I'm sure there will be more than a dozen serviceable veteran RBs who can come in and adequately fill the role of a 5th RB.

That being said, if we do add another RB, he's someone who can line up at FB, preferable someone over 240, and with soft hands. Find me one of those OTG....but find him in FA

You clearly didn't read my Notes, Brother Ken.

But thanks for the kind words.

Never hurts to shore up depth with a possible late round RB pick.

I like Chris Polk from Washington. Not sure if he fits NE's system but every time I watch him he's always breaking tackles and running over players.

I'm also wondering where LaMichael James from Oregon is going to go...people think he's too small to withstand the rigors of the NFL but I'm sure someone will take a flyer on him.

My favorite RB is David Wilson from Virginia Tech. Great speed and very hard to tackle. He doesn't look that big in pads, but he is tough and won't go down easy. Not sure he is the most instinctive runner though. He's also a very good kickoff returner.

"Boom" Herron is basically your BJGE type player but slightly faster.

But I still hate him. So. No.

Good eye, my good man.

Polk may be a bit too gourmet ~ to employ Brother Snake's rather crafty term!! ~ for your taste, as I believe his Market Value is the 2nd to 3rd Round range, though I could always be wrong...

I like James a great deal!! Very intriguing skill set...Looking like a 3rd or 4th Rounder at this early stage...

What I absolutely LOVE about you, Brother Ninja, is that you're not afraid to take a CLEAR position!! :rocker:

Any idea if he's our man Mack's grandchild??

You know: Smack Herron??

Guess who that is, blasting the way for'm in that Pic?? :rocker:

Ah!! Brother Wilson...

VERY intriguing Prospect.

Explosive.

Good EYE, Brother Soul!!

Explanation of Colors + Numbers

1 ~ Red = OverRated ~ in my OH so humble opinion!!

2 ~ Purple = Sleeper or Steal or Super Sleeper!!

3 ~ Blue = Bargain ~ Good Value.

4 ~ The first number = Market Value ~ my best guess, based on CBS, Walter, Et Cetera...

5 ~ The second number = FIENDISH Value ~ how I grade them!!

6 ~ These will all be Cut + Pasted from yon Site, so the formats are different.

An Explanation of My Twisted ViewPoint!!

I have no intention or expectation of converting anyone to my view of things, of course. That doesn't happen, anyway: People make up their own minds in their own way...But an explanation is warranted, I think, out of respect to those of you who do me the honor of reading these Works.

***

Running Backs are an interesting lot.

Like Split Ends ~ Wide Outs, Flankers, Wide Receivers ~ they are generally give far more credit for what shows up on ESPN than they deserve...and far LESS credit for doing the little things that Move The Chains and win BALL GAMES.

Barry Sanders is considered a GOD, by many...

And yet Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier, John Riggins, Emmett Smith, and their like...are generally considered to be "Role Players" who were at the right place at the right time.

And that's just DOG ****.

Championships are won by teams that Move The Chains and play Tenacious D.

That's been true for 90 years ~ with a few random exceptions ~ and it's still true.

Let me be clear, though...

I consider an O Back's importance to be DWARFED by that of the O Line that Blocks for'm, in any team's Destiny.

And when I speak of Destiny, I don't speak of Yards.

I speak of Moving The Chains.

I speak of Wins...and Championships.

When I look to an O Back for Prowess, I look to Diagnostic Acuity and Processing Speed as the play develops...

I look for a guy who Navigates the Field like a Cavalry General...and who Rapidly Reads + Reacts!!

And I look to Burst, Fluidity, Verticity, and Torsion!!

***

Trent Richardson ~ 5.9/228 ~ 1st ~ 1st

Super Beast!!

Even last year, when Mark Ingram was, far and away, the consensus first Tail Back expected to be drafted, those who who knew what was really going on said he wasn't even the best Tail Back on the team.

And he is a deadly threat as a Receiver.

I simply don't know who I can compare him to.

I only know that he is destined for Greatness.

Super Beast.

Super Steal.

Name Your Price.

David Wilson ~ 5.10/207 ~ 2nd ~ 2nd

Starter!! Dave Wilson doesn't possess nearly as much Diagnostic Acuity or Processing Speed I like to see, but he commands terrific Core Strength, and runs with an outstanding combination of Power + Speed.

He's a legitimate threat in the Receiving Game, as well.

His Blocking needs a lot of work, though.

He should be a lead back at the next level, and a powerfull one. Fair Value!!

Lamar Miller ~ 5.11/212 ~ 2nd ~ 2nd

Starter!! Lamar Miller commands exceptional Navigational Skills: his Fluidity, Lateral Agility, Verticity, and Torsion are all outstanding.

He also displays superior Diagnostic Acuity and Processing Speed in reading the play before'm.

And he gets excellent reviews for his Receiving skills.

However, his Blocking is very suspect.

And his Core Strength is questionable, as well: The Power Game is not his thing.

Still, as long as he's drafted by a Zone Blocking team, he could be an explosive Lead Back. Fair Value!!

Doug Martin ~ 5.9/224 ~ 2nd ~ 1st

Beast!! Doug Martin commands an intoxicating fusion of Core Strength, Explosiveness, and Agility.

He can absolutely blast it between the Tackles, and he can also be extremely effective OutSide.

Most importantly of all, he's got the Core Strength, the Core Flexibility, the Fluidity, and the Lateral Agility to consistently be a threat, on any given play, to go through you or around you.

He's a solid Receiver.

And he's a solid Blocker.

In short, Doug Martin commands everything needed to become an outstanding Lead Back. Steal!!

Christopher Polk ~ 5.11/216 ~ 2nd-3rd ~ 4th-5th

Role Player!! I like Christopher Polk, but he doesn't command the Core Strength, Burst, or Agility I'd like to see for him to succeed at the next level.

He does bring outstanding Diagnostic Acuity, Vision, and Processing Speed to the table, but just doesn't have the physical skill set to take full advantage of'm.

Mind you: He's a very effective Receiver.

And he's crafty enough to survive as a Blocker.

This is a smart kid who could definitely prove me wrong on his limitations ~ and I hope he does!! ~ but as of now I see him as Role Player. OverRated!!

Isaiah Pead ~ 5.10/196 ~ 3rd ~ 4th-5th

Role Player!! Isaiah Pead doesn't have the greatest Core Strength in the world, so he's definitely not going to be your Hard Yard Masher or Pile Mover.

And he doesn't have the greatest Lateral Agility or Fluidity, much less Veriticity or Torsion on'is breaks.

But he does command an exceptional Burst, which could go a long way ~ haw ~ in a Power Scheme!!

He could use some improvement as a Blocker.

But he's effective in the Passing Game as a Receiver.

Looks like he could earn his keep as a situational 3rd Down kind of Role Player, but his Market Value is a little lofty for my tastes, at his current level. OverRated!!

Bernard Pierce ~ 6.0/218 ~ 3rd-4th ~ 5th-7th

Reserve!! Bernard Pierce commands one trait that I place tremendous value on: Verticity ~ the ability to cut out'f'is Breaks with Precision and Velocity.

For the rest of it, he's not very impressive to these eyes: Mediocre Power and Agility.

Furthermore, his Blocking is very weak.

And his Receiving Resume doesn't exist.

Still, I could see him carving out a role for'imself, based on that sweet, sweet Verticity, alone...But the Value I'd place on'im, at this time, is Reserve. OverRated!!

LaMichael James ~ 5.8/195 ~ 3rd-4th ~ 3rd-4th

Super Sub!! LaMichael James is a classic Slot Back ~ I apologize, but I cannot abide "Scat Back", which is an hideous and disgusting term, in my eyes.

He's got terrific Burst and Range to the edge, and can create plays in the Open Field.

Just don't ask'm to run Between the Tackles.

He's surprisingly solid as a Blocker.

And he's phenomenal as a Receiver.

Normally, I'd put him in the usual 4th-5th Round "Role Player" range, but, despite his uselessness between the Tackles, those last two attributes elevate him, even as a Role Player, to a special level, I believe. Fair Value!!

Cyrus Gray ~ 5.10/207 ~ 3rd-4th ~ 1st

Beast!! Cyrus Gray brings excellent Core Strength to the table, and employs exceptional Lateral Agility and Fluidity, sharp Verticity, and explosive Torsion to consistently hit the holes that are there, and to create, when they aren't.

He commands outstanding Diagnostic Acuity and Processing Speed, and the Patience to work with his Linemen and wait for the Blocks to develop.

He's one of the very best Navigators in this Class.

He's a ferocious, motivated Blocker, and a good one.

And he's an emerging Receiving threat.

His best attribute is his attitude, however, as all agree his is an awesome, team-first team mate with a tremendous Work Ethic...

And yet his Market Value is floating somewhere around the 3rd or 4th Round!! Super Sleeper!!

Ronnie Hillman ~ 5.9/200 ~ 4th ~ 6th-7th

Reserve!! Ronnie Hillman doesn't bring much in the way of Power, Explosiveness, or Agility to the table, nor is there anything remarkable about either his Blocking or his Receiving.

Looks like a Reserve to me. OverRated!!

Christopher Rainey ~ 5.8/180 ~ 4th ~ 4th

Role Player!! Christopher Rainey is fragile as Hell, and he'd BEST lay on a solid 10-15 pounds of BEEF, if he wants to survive in this League...

But, having said that, he is EXPLOSIVE.

Don't ask'm to run between the Tackles, but while his Burst doesn't equal his Long Speed, it's still pretty damned good, and his Agility isn't bad, either.

He's surprisingly decent as a Blocker, a tough one.

And he's a dangerous weapon, though a raw one, as a Receiver in the Passing Game.

Looks like an effective 3rd Down Back. Fair Value!!

Tauren Poole ~ 5.10/204 ~ 4th-5th ~ 2nd

Starter!! Tauren Poole commands an extremely intriguing combination of Diagnostic Acuity, highly impressive Processing Speed under fire, tremendous Burst out'f the Blocks, and Power.

He certainly doesn't bring an overload of Agility to the table, mind you: Verticity and Torsion are not his greatest strengths.

But as a Cavalry Commander who surveys the field, rapidly diagnoses his options, and responds with quick, decisive Power and Explosiveness, he is excellent.

Furthermore, he applies his superior Diagnostic Power and Processing Speed to his Blocking, as well.

And his Receiving Game is outstanding for similar reasons: a fusion of Intelligence and Athleticism.

All in all, Tauren Poole brings a pretty impressive Game to the table, and is as prepared as any Back in this Class to consistently Move The Chains!! Sleeper!!

Dan Herron ~ 5.10/213 ~ 4th-5th ~ 3rd-4th

Potential Starter!! Dan Herron is a solid Runner who brings adequate Power and Agility to the table.

But he boasts exceptional Processing Speed and Diagnostic Acuity, to the table, showing increasing Patience to let his Linemen develop their Blocks.

He's a very adept Blocker.

And he shows great promise as a Receiver.

I wouldn't target him as a Lead Back, because his Game isn't especially dynamic...

But I wouldn't lose a moment's sleep if he needed to step up and fill that role for any length of time, even a number of years, frankly. Deal!!

Robert Turbin ~ 5.10/222 ~ 5th ~ 3rd-4th

Potential Starter!! Robert Turbin brings a great load of Power and Decisiveness to the table. He reads the field well, picks his spots, and Moves The Chains.

He's not particularly Explosive or Elusive, but he can make a man miss from time to time, and isn't stiff.

He's a strong, tenacious Blocker.

And he's a very adept Receiver.

Turbin looks like he'll probably be a strong Lead Back at the next level, as he commands an unspectacular yet complete Game. Deal!!

Vick Ballard ~ 5.10/220 ~ 5th ~ 5th-7th

Role Player!! Vick Ballard boasts superior Processing Speed, and he brings pretty strong Power to the field, though not a great deal of Burst or Agility.

As a Receiver, he needs a lot of work.

As a Blocker, he needs experience.

He should probably be able to carve out a role at the next level. Fair Value!!

Terrance Ganaway ~ 6.0/240 ~ 5th-6th ~ UFA

Fringe Reserve!! Terrance Ganaway boasts excellent Power, but he is greatly hampered by a lack of Agility of any kind, a lack of Burst, and a lack of any ancillary skills, such as Receiving or Blocking acuity.

He's a long shot, in my mind. OverRated!!

Davin Meggett ~ 5.8/210 ~ 6th ~ 6th-7th

Reserve!! Davin Meggett brings impressive Burst and Lateral Agility to the table, but his Game is hindered by insufficient Diagnostic Acuity and Processing Speed: He is an unreliable Runner, and is no sure thing to even make a roster at the next level.

He's also a sloppy Blocker.

He's a very adept Receiver, though.

Looks like a borderline guy, but if he gets it together, his upside is as a significant Role Player. Fair Value!!

Bobby Rainey ~ 5.7/208 ~ 6th ~ 3rd-4th

Super Sub!! Bob Rainey commands an intriguing fusion of Burst, Fluidity, and Long Speed!!

He's no Power Back, mind you.

And his Blocking leaves much to be desired.

But he's pretty sharp as a Receiver.

And he is a dynamic Runner. He's more of a Slot Back, but he should be a dangerous one. Sleeper!!

Brandon Bolden ~ 5.11/222 ~ 6th-7th ~ 7th

Reserve!! Brandon Bolden is, quite possibly, The Most Average Back in this entire Draft Class.

He has no particular Strengths.

And he has not particular Weaknesses.

He just...is.

Fair Value!!

Marc Tyler ~ 5.11/220 ~ 7th ~ UFA

Fringe Reserve!! Marc Tyler commands superior Vision, Processing Speed, and Receiving skills, but is hampered by a dearth of Agility, a lack of Burst, and by surprisingly deficient Power and Blocking.

He's smart and versatile enough to have an outside shot, but I call him a UFA at this point.

Chad Diehl ~ 6.2/256 ~ 7th ~ UFA

Fringe Reserve!! Chad Diehl is a Scrapper, but his Core Strength and Power isn't what it needs to be, for him to forge a role as a Full Back at the next level.

Still, he's got a lot of Heart. I hope he makes it.

Lennon Creer ~ 5.11/220 ~ 7th ~ UFA

Long Shot!! I simply don't see anything in Lennon Creer's Game to warrant a roster spot. He lacks Power, Agility, and Explosion, and doesn't stand out as a Blocker or Receiver, either, I'm afraid.

Adonis Thomas ~ 5.10/185 ~ 7th ~ 4th-5th

Role Player!! Adonis Thomas commands an intriguing combination of Burst, Agility, and incredibly sharp Verticity and explosive Torsion out'f'is Breaks!!

He's no Hard Yard Masher, mind you.

And he's not much of a Blocker.

But he can make plays in the Passing Game, as well.

Thomas is a dynamic Threat, and should be able to carve out a significant role as a Slot Back/3rd Down Back/Passing Down Back. Sleeper!!

Cody Johnson ~ 5.11/252 ~ 7th ~ UFA

Fringe Reserve!! Cody Johnson commands both the Core Strength and the Power to forge a spot on an NFL Roster as a Full Back, but I'm not sure about his Agility or his Burst. He seems to be hindered by very limited Fluidity, and that could prove fatal to his chances to stick at the next level. I hope not.

Daryl Richardson ~ 5.10/195 ~ UFA ~ 4th-5th

Role Player!! Daryl Richardson is Flying Well Below The Radar, but he brings an intriguing combination of Burst and Explosive Agility to the table.

Power??

Look elsewhere.

Even so, we have the makings of a very explosive Slot
Back, one who could make a lot of noise on Passing Downs at the next level. Sleeper!!

Michael Smith ~ 5.8/207 ~ UFA ~ 4th-5th

There's not much to go on with Michael Smith, mind you: He was Robert Turbin's understudy at Utah State, and all I've got to work with is the Senior Bowl, the Potato Bowl, and Wes Bunting's Scouting Report at National FootBall Post.

But, my GOD...

Outstanding Lateral Agility.

Extraordinary Fluidity.

Phenomenally explosive Burst out'f's Breaks.

I have no idea if he can Block, but his astonishing numbers at his Pro Day ~ including a 40 inch Vertical!!! ~ leave no question that he commands the Core Strength and Core Power to PANCAKE.

And he is a proven threat in the Passing Game.

Wouldn't it be remarkable if the two best O Backs in this entire Draft Class ended up being the first guy taken...and the last??

Rod "Do You Think I'm Sexy???" Stewart ~ 5.6/176 ~ UFA ~ 4th-5th

Role Player!!

Rod "Do You Think I'm Sexy???" Stewart is a GNAT.

Rod Stewart is a spry, angry little Gnat.

He is spry.

And he is angry.

And he is small.

He is, in fact, an annoying, spry, angry little GNAT.

Now that we've clarified that matter...

Give...him...the BALL.

Rod "Do You Think I'm Sexy?" Stewart can not Block.

...Because he is a GNAT.

Once you get past THAT, though...the possibilities with Rodney "The Gnat" Stewart are endless.

And that is because Rod "Do You Think I'm Sexy?" Stewart is possessed of an alarming level of Vision... of Fluidity...of Diagnostic Acuity...of Processing Speed...of Lateral Agility...of razor-sharp Verticity... and of raw, explosive Torsion out'f'is Breaks.

And he's an acute threat in the Passing Game, as well.

Rod "Do You Think I'm Sexy???" Stewart is Danny WoodHead V2.0...and that, ladies and gentlemen...is a beautifull thing. Sleeper!!

Awesome!! It's complete!! And what a BLAST!! :rocker:

Thank you SO much for your courtesy, gents!! :eat3:

Excellent post as usual Off The Grid!
Robert Turbin is my binky, and would be a nice replacement for the departed BJGE.

1. Some of the scouts I follow on twitter absolutely love Michael Smith so well spotted.

2. I wouldn't be surprised if on the day, Doug Martin is the Patriots WTF! first round pick. Obviously would be a huge shock, but he's everything the Pats want from a RB.

I would be pissed-off enough if one of our precious 1st-4th round picks is used on a RB;
I would be highly pissed-off beyond belief if one of our top-48 picks was used on a RB.

There should be enough RBs available post-draft that Bill doesn't have to waste a valuable
resource in order to find & sign a RB capable of earning a spot on the PS, if not the 53 itself.
It's not like it hasn't been done before (ref.: GE, BJ; Woodhead, Danny; and Foster, Arian).

Very interesting point on Martin!!
