Steve Zabel, throwback two-way player, dies at 78

Steve Zabel, a tight end and pass rusher who was Oklahoma's last two-way player and then played both positions in the NFL, has died at the age of 78.

He was a tough SOB when he played for the Patriots.
Funny, I remember when I was driving and heard the the Patriots had signed Vrabel. I said that I thought he retired, meaning Zabel.
RIP Steve Zabel.

Sad to hear. My thoughts go out to his friends & family. He was a tough, hard nosed linebacker, always liked him.

Being 63 yo, I’m seeing so many of my favorites from my youth pass away. Zabel-Nelson-Hunt-King. I think those were the starting linebackers in 1976 in the Pat’s 3-4 defense.

Being 63 yo, I’m seeing so many of my favorites from my youth pass away. Zabel-Nelson-Hunt-King. I think those were the starting linebackers in 1976 in the Pat’s 3-4 defense.

And each and every one of them deserved a Super Bowl ring.

Steve remained salty about it to this day, as I am.

I'll never forget him running out on the field in Tampa to kick the last extra point. Successfully.

He caught TD's as a tight end in Philly, but he said, "I don't care about any of that. I'll always be a Patriot."
