Scott Pioli on Patriots’ Approach with Top Prospects: ‘They had to be clean’
Ian Logue
When it comes to looking at first-round players in the NFL Draft, former Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel, Scott Pioli, has a pretty good idea of what the New England Patriots usually look for.

The post Scott Pioli on Patriots’ Approach with Top Prospects: ‘They had to be clean’ appeared first on PatsFans.com.

Reading this makes the 2014 pick of Dominique Easley pick that much more bizarre.

So true! Every time bb goes rogue and tries to outsmart the draftniks, it blows up in his face and we end up with a turd on the roster.

Oddly, when he stays true to his board, we usually get a quality contributor.

Is it (in this case) about outsmarting the draftniks or, since they had a thick and solid vet roster in the years in question, taking a shot with someone who might have elite talent but dropped because of injury? At one point, Easley's first step was amazing - he was across the line before others had moved.

BB doesn't always do this. Sometimes he takes the conventional #32 pick - like Brown, who served the DL well, but unremarkably for 4 years.

While I agree that sometimes they seem to outsmart themselves, the idea of trying to acquire elite talent in a draft spot where there usually isn't any, and for a team that's already pretty set with starters often seems like a worthwhile gamble.

(In Easley's case, I and others, notably Deus Irae, were screaming for Stephon Tuitt, who's had a really strong career.)

Luckily for us, Bill didn’t draft many turds on the 1st round besides Easley and Harry.

Many local media and Pats fans were screaming Tuitt. I was neutral on Tuitt, but didn’t want anyone with blown out knees. Just an awful use of a 1st round pick.

And this is the rub! If you are going to keep the dynasty going, you have to keep bringing in talent so you can let experienced players leave via free agency in order to best manage the cap.

The classic example is mccourty! For the last several years, the only other free safety we had on the team was Duran. He and mccourty aged and we left Duran go. Last season, we had no other free safety in the roster, so we had to resign mccourty this offseason, who has clearly slowed down and lost a few steps in coverage.

This is why you don’t go rogue on day 1 or day 2. Bb can go rogue all he wants on day 3.

Great read Ian, thx for sharing this.
