Ivan and Andy, can you two PM each other your arguments, please? I know it's the off-season and all, but this really has become a bit silly, no? You're starting to sound like a bitter, old married couple..

Miguel says this about trading RFA, and Malcolm Butler in particular :

RFA | Patriots Salary Cap

Q: Can Malcolm Butler be traded without first signing the tender?
A: No

Q: How would a trade with another team work?

A: The Patriots and the other team agree on the terms of the trade (be it Butler for a player or Butler for draft picks or some combination of the three). Butler and other team agree to a deal. The NFLPA then approves trade. Butler signs tender. Trade is then executed. Butler and other team then executes long-term deal.

It's obvious that some negotiation has to happen for a team to trade a RFA before he signs the tender. But if a RFA doesn't want to get traded, and he doesn't sign the tender, the trade won't happen.

They're starting to repeat themselves too. RDS11 post should put an end to the silly back and forth but it probably wont.

BTW, @Miguel thinks the mysterious $3mil change in the NE salary cap number is a clerical error not including Branch's salary.

You guys are right. I'll let this be my last post on the subject. I'll let the fact that Belichick (nor anyone else for that matter, including Andy) never cited an actual rule that says you can't discuss trading an RFA, and the fact that negotiating possible trades involving RFAs actually has happened many times in the NFL - including by the Patriots themselves - stand. And that means that we need to ask why BB would say what he said, and the answer is I don't know, but there are many *possible* reasons.

Miguel's point further supports the actual part of the CBA regarding RFAs that I quoted a little while back, that as long as the player and the NFLPA are on board, it's perfectly fine for teams to negotiate such trades.

I'll let that all stand against Andy's, "Well, BB said this once so none of the rest of that could possibly be fact...."

I shall now step out of this conversation.

I could have read Atlas shrugged but instead I read this thread and I'm a better man for it or at least I hope I am.
Gotta disagree, Tony. I haven't learned one interesting thing about Malcolm Butler this whole time. We're stuck in Act 2 of this miserable drama.

So basically "it backs my opinion on the matter, so it must be true"

You keep clinging to the "show me in the CBA" ****. Well how about you show me proof that Belichick has changed his stance on not talking trades about unsigned players.

including by the Patriots themselves

PATRIOTS STILL GAVE THE 2ND ROUND PICK MIAMI TENDERED WELKER WITH.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!??! Is he up all night because he's so excited about being traded to the Saints??!

It could simply mean he's up early and working hard every day

I think they just need to go have sex with each other. That usually settles things. For a while.
I once lived with a girl in college and we fought frequently, though playful most of the time. Well, I got drunk one night, which is strange for me, and I was told that I just kept telling her how gorgeous I thought she was. We did eventually "bump" into each other shortly after that and I don't recall ever fighting with her again. We're actually still friends to this day.

Explains everything.
The Patriots haven't traded him for 32 because the Pats want 28 instead.
