Good nuggets cultivated by Curran on BB's thinking on DB matchups.

FWIW- BB drawing parallels to stack ranking DB matchups to tennis ladders. Whats next? Squash?

“You can matchup and put your best guy on their best guy, or you can matchup and put your best guy on let’s call it their second best guy and put your second best guy on their best guy and double him,” Belichick said. “If you’re going to put your best guy on their best guy and double him anyway then you kind of lessen the matchups down the line. It’s like setting a tennis ladder, or whatever. If you put your bad guy at one and you win two through seven, great. If you put your best guy at one and he gets beat by their one and then your two versus their two, you know. That’s what you’re doing. You have a three to four-man ladder there with the receivers and your DB’s [defensive backs], except we don’t have to match them that way. You can match them however you want.”

Belichick explains matching in the secondary

There are many coaches in the NFL that play the same defensive scheme every week. Belichick is a master tinkerer; always changing and adapting from opponent to opponent. He was on Dale & Holley yesterday talking about the 2001 season and how his defensive approach against the Rams during the regular season was wrong and how they adjusted in the Super Bowl.

I think Belichick's approach sometimes makes it difficult for his guys to get comfortable in the scheme. That's probably why the defense gets better as the season progresses.

BB is strong. We get all panicked & whatnot watching games. Seeing player X "torching" one of our guys....... then the game end : and 85% of the time, we win.

I like cheering for a team that has a coach who sees the many possibilities rather than a coach who foolishly sticks to one idea & prays it works.
