BB : Gronk and Bavaro comparison.

Stupid thread title. BB often discusses football in depth on Fridays, and occasionally on other days of the week too.

Publicly, I mean. Without that qualifier I imagine he discusses football in depth almost every day of the year, and thinks about it in depth the few days he doesn't have anybody around to discuss it with.

Agreed. There is a reason why Interception is the only poster on this entire website who has more negative ratings than positive.

I just changed the title.

BB stopped short of putting Gronk at Bavaros level.

I agree with him..but its damn close.

What? Are you kidding? Bavaro is not even close to Gronk as an offensive weapon. Not in the same league, not in the same state not even on the same planet.
How can BB not rate Gronk over Bavaro? Blocking maybe, I suppose. But with all that offensive explosiveness how good a blocker does he need to be. I know BB values TEs who can block but from what I've heard, Gronk is an excellent blocker so I can't imagine what BB is on about here.

Because Gronk is still an active player, and he's not putting him in Canton just yet.

Wait a second.

He was speaking only about BLOCKING.

He acknowledges that Gronkowski is a far better pass catcher.

.

Bavaro should be flattered to have his game compared to Gronk's.

Why are you questioning how Obi-Wan motivates his highly talented young pupils (by using the mediots to tell him he needs to work harder to reach the next level)?

This is in fact absolutely true....I mean it's the truth, not an opinion. Gronk is a better wide receiver than most wide receivers....never mind that at his point in his career, he's the best tight end in history.

Belichick wants to make sure Gronk keeps striving to improve....what better way than to talk about how great Bavarro was.

From hearing gronk talk to the media, i do not think he really needs motivating

Think about it. When does bb ever tolerate outright getting a penalty? Gronk, when throwing brown out of the club knew he was going to get a penalty, but BB gave him a hand shake/ high five immediately after.

I do not think that bb has conplimented even brady as much as he compliments gronk.

How is it even possible to have more negative ratings? It's customary to use dislikes and disagrees sparingly for truly offensive or rediculous comments and not throw them around.

Bavarro was the prototype for TEs getting YAC by carrying guys with him downfield. Gronk is no better at that for his era than Bavarro was for his.

The main subject was blocking. Let's defer to BB on that one.

Gronk has it over Bavarro in three ways. First, guys in the modern era are bigger, stronger, etc., and also deal with more complex playbooks. For two players of equal stature in their day, the one who's playing a few decades later can be presumed better.

Second, I think Gronk is faster even relative to his era.

Third and not least, Gronk's catching ability is worthy of comparison to a WR's.

bavaro isn't in canton either.

belichick was comparing gronk and bavaro as blockers

BB comparing Gronk to Bavaro is the ultimate compliment BB can give to any ACTIVE TE. That and the fact Gronk hasn't played a pre season snap in years, should tell you how BB really feels about Gronk.

To BB I think Bavaro is/was what the epitome of what a Tight end should be. Hes the standard to him. I know guys like Winslow, Gonzalez, and Sharpe have all the receiving numbers, but Bavaro was a great receiver, and even a better blocker. BB practiced against Bavaro for years, and seen how he competed against his elite LB's.

Must say, when BB really likes a player, he really likes a player. He'll go out of his way to praise a guy. LT, Banks, Bavaro, and Ed Reed are guys that always come to mind.

I don't believe anyone's put Bavaro in Canton just yet, either.
