Why not put players that are respected leaders in the locker room as captains? That seems like the absolutely best way to go. Not to have some freaking show about "haha, look who we got from you", even when it's most often mediocre or even bad players, that he has because they are just that. Make it about the team, and not about fueling your ego against other teams.
