It's not any sinister conspiracy theory, it's pretty simple. The common element amongst all NFL fans is that they hate the Pats. Anyone who works in advertising in a big corporation is sure to recognize that and pander to it.

If they didn't have a lot of money they would probably just be an average team too. Given that their current approach to team building is geared around keeping up with a Yankees team $80m ahead of them, they have to get whatever FAs they can if they want to stand a chance.

I still don't know what "running up the score" means. If it simply means not calling any passing plays when running the regular offensive playbook is no longer beneficial to the team then the Pats do not run up the score and never have. If it means anything else then who cares.

I read this article a while ago and it makes perfect sense to me that statistical analysis favors more aggressive/higher variance decisions that go against "gut" feelings. The comparison that comes to mind is poker, where the game has evolved to the point where loose aggro players are dominating...
