POLLACK PACKING IT IN
Posted by Mike Florio on April 22, 2008, 2:56 p.m.

Bengals linebacker David Pollack, a first-round pick in 2005 whose career was derailed by a broken neck suffered in 2006, has decided not to pursue a return to the NFL.

Coach Marvin Lewis acknowledged Pollack’s decision on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, there’s something about this passage from Bengals.com that is bothering us: “Pollack, a defensive end at Georgia that the Bengals chose No. 17, had a tough, brief pro career that was in such contrast to his All-American run. His switch to strongside linebacker was complicated by a nearly three-week holdout and injuries limited him to 14 games, but he did become the first Bengals rookie to log a postseason sack and with four of his 4.5 sacks coming late in the season he looked to have turned the corner.”

The guy’s career was dramatically shortened by a broken neck, and the team is dredging up the fact that he held out for three weeks as a rookie? And should Pollack also be regarded as injury-prone or soft because he only played in 14 of 16 games as a rookie?

We’re not suggesting that Geoff Hobson’s assessment crosses the line; it just stikes us as bad form to be saying anything other than good things about Pollack on the day that his inability to continue what looked to be a very promising pro football career has become official.

And that’s coming from a web site that is always looking for a negative angle.

Sad day for NFL Fans.

Such a great talent with a tragic injury.

I wish him the absolute best in life and hope his body stays together and he doesnt have any side effects when getting older.

sounds like a great guy. best of luck to him and his family.

One of the few nice, clean cut guys in a Bengals uniform,I wish his post career be a success

So I guess a Pollack joke wouldn't be warmly received?

Funny you should say that, I remember after a Georgia game, Pollack had an amazing game, and the female sideline reporter was talking to the coach at mid-field after the game, and she said something like "and how about that game Pollock had?" And he replied, "well, yeah David POLLACK had a great game" completely making her look like an ass. It was pretty great.

But yeah, a real shame with him. I thought he was going to be a stud in the NFL. Unfortunately he had to follow a similar career path as Andy K.

I watched him play here at Georgia, and he's one my favorite Georgia players of all time. Sad to see it end like this for him, but he seems to have a great life otherwise.

His most famous play at Georgia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQYAD-KSd1E. The video also the interview tombonneau was talking about.

I am so glad he made that decision. this is a serious health concern, and football, while his passion, is only a game. That was the right decision and I am glad to see that this guy can move on with his life in a safe way. More power to him, and best of luck moving forward.

I thought of Katzenmoyer also when I saw this story.

It's really too bad that their promising careers were cut short. On the other hand, they did get to, literally, walk away from the game. It was probably a very tough decision to accept, but avoiding another, possibly more significant neck injury, was the right thing to do.

Well, I'd have to say he was the ass, not her. She made a mistake. He acted like an ass. There's a difference.
