he was on the verge of making the 53 man before he injured
I disagree.

He was an UDFA who didn't even have one hit in practice before going on iR in late July. He definitely was NOT on the verge of making the 53.

if the team was going to keep a FB, it was going tobe him

I am a bit surprised at this release timing considering camp has just started. What if he is signed by another team and then Gilliam gets hurt a few days later? Now you are back to your FB being Jack Westover.
If he couldn’t beat out Westover then he must not be showing any promise

After watching Anchorman, I thought I was never going to see that lamp guy again. Some people strike gold being in that right place at the right time. Just one year later he strikes gold with the “40 Year Old Virgin” and TV show “The Office”.

He and Jack Black have very similar career paths. Black was pretty irrelevant for quite some time before he hit the jackpot with “Shallow Hall”.

He got injured during the team's first padded practice of training camp. He was far from making the team.
they gave him significant money last year to sign him as an udfa
I paid a premium for Swedish Fish, it was still pennies. No UDFA’s contract precludes a team from cutting them. They make peanuts.
who knows the teams point of view? not me. not you.
but if Gilliam injures, imo....short sighted decision
Westover is still on the roster. Lampe probably got cut because he was third on the depths chart, not because of Gilliam.

Its a sign that Lamp Sucks from their vantage point.
That's a harsh take...

Maybe some news / info will shake loose over the next few days about him

If I am not mistaken, Westover is still on the rostet (90) as a TIGHT END, Not as a FB.

But he can fill in for both.

Maybe the team felt Westover was as good as Lampe at FB or close enough to keep him for the versatility.

They may feel that Arkin could make the transition.

Westover played FB all of last year despite being listed on the roster as a TE.

As pointed out to you, this is BS on your part. Lampe sustained his injury during the Pats first full padded practice.. Went on the IR on 7/29.

No. They didn't. Lampe signed a 3 year deal for the minimums with a 15K signing bonus and 55K in guarantees.

Or, Lampe didn't follow the regimen that the Pats gave him and didn't come into camp ready. There are a plethora of reasons that this happened that would not make this a "short sighted decision". Considering how wrong you've been on NUMEROUS occasions, you should probably sit this out.

And Westover is horrible as a FB and not much better as a TE.

He played FB all last year.

It appears they’re auditioning him everywhere to decide whether he has a future.

The only reason people had a chubby for Lampe last offseason was McDaniels desire for a FB, some video of him blocking stiffs at Northern Illinois University in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and of course… a PFF grade that said he was outstanding.

That, and the fact that there didn't appear to be another FB on the roster. And with all apologies to Westover, there really wasn't.

We weren’t sure there was a FB on the roster with Lampe. There really wasn’t…

It’s funny many of the same people calling us thin at ILB because the backups went undrafted told us Lampe was great… what round was he drafted in again?

Even Gilliam was a UDFA out of mighty Toledo. Fullbacks have become an endangered species -- they're drafted at about the same rate as long snappers (but don't create the same agonized cries of "wasted draft pick!")

I agree, but they were actually looking for a starting FB last year, not depth for the fear of being thin.

Coincidentally both of the starting ILB’s on last years top ranked defense were also undrafted. So there’s that.

This makes me wonder if our wonderful new true FB will be used as much as we think he will be this year. Maybe they’re thinking that with his low workload, his chances of season ending injury won’t really hurt as much since the plan may be to not fully unleash Josh’s FB plan…this year…then next year if he does very good at that low workload, he will warrant a true backup….

Just a thought…

Or maybe our FB truly is a tough sob….
