Russini & Vrabel Nothing to see here?

In my newspaper days I did a rather high stakes investigative report on a woman in Lowell who accused her estranged husband of sexually abusing their two young daughters before kidnapping both of them to his native Greece. I interviewed the woman quite a few times along with others involved -- doctors, a legal guardian, etc. Before the story was published I had to vet everything with the paper's lawyer; one question he asked was if I'd been intimate with her. The point was if the husband challenged us legally my objectivity had to be unassailable.

Of course, few things destroy a reporter's credibility more surely than becoming personally involved with sources -- it's a professional red line you dare not cross. Again, IF Russini was boinking Vrabel it was recklessly stupid and not too bright of him either.

This was some 29 years ago, at the time the U.S. had no extradition agreement with Greece involving such matters. So, she flew there and with help of a private investigator was able to "kidnap back" the older of the two girls. The younger one remained there.

The story subsequently made the CBS newsmagazine show "48 Hours," here's a link: Kidnapped!

Very rare for it to be a one time thing. Most likely, if it happened at all, it has happened before with Vrabel and/or others.

That supports the PI theory. No one hires a PI out of the blue. They do it if they have their suspicions already in place.
 
The Athletic has a very easy off-ramp here. It is being reported her contract ends in August. If they suspend her with pay - which it looks like they already have - then the problem disappears in 4 month.

After that, who knows what will happen in her career…. She may latch on to some talking head show or something like that…

A couple of friends shared custody of a son from a former marriage, with the other parent who lived in Latin America, iirc Panama. The boy went for his usual summer visit and wasn’t returned at end of summer vacation. My friend went on a vacation trip with some friends from his Special Forces unit and returned a week later with the boy.
 
I don't know what's going on here (beyond, the usual "smoke" and "fire" connections), but I do know that Vrabel now no longer has the credibility to tell his players not to "create distractions" off the field. That's, at best, "not a good thing."

Bottom line? Whatever may or may not have happened, this is not helpful. At least BB waited until he left the Pats before he made a circus of his private life with, in his case, someone young enough to be his granddaughter.

But did Vrabs create a distraction? If you assumed he was just meeting up with a friend, where is the distraction from his actions point of view? Even if he was cheating on his spouse, he or his friends did not record that and put it on social media. Not sure how Vrabs caused this.

Vrabel is skipping the pre-draft press conference. I think this is unwise. His first press conference after the controversy erupted is going to be a huge **** sandwich so I think he is better off getting it over with, especially at a time when the press conference itself won't really have legs past Thursday the 23rd when we all will have something new to talk about.

He was never scheduled to speak this year. It was always Wolfe. Florio spreading misinformation.

It is a distraction. It doesn't appear innocent but even if there is a "good excuse" for him to meet Russini, hang out in the hot tub and pool with her, and interlock fingers on top of a condo at a romantic couples resort, it's a very unwise decision. It's tougher to tell your players to make wise decisions and preach loyalty and family when Vrabel just did this.

Secondly, doing things that potentially hurt your marriage is a distraction

The best thing is for Vrabel to be honest, come clean and reveal the truth if he wants players and people to look to him as a leader and coach. Maybe that part is done privately.

But this is going to affect him and the team in some way.

Oh I agree with that totally. IMO this is also a play to see what else comes out that could prove his words to be false. That would make it even worse. IMO if he was smart he would lay all the cards out and be 100 percent truthful. If they banged, and were still banging...fine. Be a man and deal with it.

By doing this is makes it seem like he has something to hide or doesn't want to be caught in a lie down the road.

EDIT: I saw that someone said he wasn't scheduled to do it. I think I remember seeing they had a rotation possibly. Still, him not being there is being reported everywhere so this thing as legs.

That last part is starting to piss me off. Not that the Patriots needed another off the field issue it had to come from the coach? Sigh.

I can't say I terribly much remember last year's pre-draft press conference, but I take Florio at his word when he says Vrabel participated in it.

I think the smart thing to do would be to talk to the press on the Wednesday before, or Thursday of, the NFL draft weekend. That way whatever happens will barely last a single cycle before the NFL world moves on to talking about the draft itself.
