Gonzo signaling…

Mr Peabody's Wayback Machine: For decades I worried about the cap and who we'd re-sign. I love Gonzo. One of the best CB we've ever had up with & possibly better than Ty & Mike Haynes. He should get top dollar. But I no longer worry or care as much as I did in the Brady BB years. Love the Pats but I don't follow as closely and certainly don't have the deep emotional commitment. I knew my passion would flag once they left and it did.
These days I follow player status loosely. No longer do I care passionately who gets cut in September. I love Varies & root for Maye, Gonzo, et. al. but when things don't work out I'm no longer depressed. Just disappointed.
Sincerely hope we re-sign him but no longer emotionally involved.
Thank you sharing your insights as a fan I enjoy reading the thoughts of fans on the forum i can definitely understand your points.. for me as fan.. living in Boston and being so tied to the patiots organization as they do so much in the communities.. it hard not to pay close attention to things associated with the team they have grown so much over the last 25 years... what I would like to see is if Vrabel and Drake can win another superbowl or continue on the excellent season of 2025.. of keeping the team competitive.. having gonzo around on a long-term deal absolutely assures the team a magnificent player.. I firmly believe gonzo is just scratching the surface of what he can be as a player... with the addition of byard at Safety and some additional edge rushers he will have much more opportunities for plays on the ball pick 6s and fumble recoveries..

When considering this contract, I think you have to put into context the fact that regardless of what Gonzo desires OR the current market is the Pats could control his contract for the next 3 years. That includes the last 2 years of his rookie contract for short money, plus at least another year under franchise tag.

That alone should be an incentive to create a deal that works for both parties. Why look for the last dollar when you are looking at a signing bonus of $30 to $40MM before September regardless of what the yearly average turns out to be.

How many first round picks is he worth in a trade

I’m joking. But seriously how many.

you are of course correct
but the team is a SB contender, and trying to send a message to the players and fans. Vrabel has been vocal about it.
losing Gonzo would be a major mistep on and off the field
he plays a premium, non QB position, and is arguably top 3 in the league
both sides are trying to navigate what the cap will look like 3-5 years out as they negotiate today.

trading Gonzo while he is unsigned reduces his value
The return on trading him might not in your mind be equivalent to to his value/cost ratio if we (over?)pay for his services, but it would be a very significant haul. These sorts of decisions must be based on cold, empirical evaluation to the extent possible. That is really all I'm saying. I am probably a bit exercised over all the idiotic lusting after A J Brown to which we have been subjected and would hate to see the same sort of fanboy pantytwisting gain traction in connection with this matter which we have seen re Brown.

Gonzalez deal with what's left

2026: 4.8M
2027 (option): 18.1
2028 (2026 franshise number for CB was 21.6 up just under a 1M from the previous year. Let's assume it goes up 2.4 in two years which is probably high but we'll call it) 23M

So you can think of him as being currently on a 3/45.9 deal which is a bargain and a half and it's risk free from signing bonuses and large cap hits should anything change.

If you're going to extend him it probably needs to be a 7 year deal where he sees more money in the first two years than he would now but it flattens out for the team years 4-7 for it to make sense for both sides. Say 7/175 for an average contact of 25M. The first three yeara he makes an extra 25-30M depending on how you structure the signing bonus.

If he wants top defender money not just top corner it's probably not happening until 2029 and at that point it's probably not happening here.

While I would think there's been some talk between his agent and the Pats, I would think that an extension doesn't happen until just before mandatory camps as Sauce Gardner's extension happened in mid July. If not Gonzo will sit out any non-mandatory camps as he should and will develop a hammy issue for any mandatory camp. I'd think he'd not miss any games but he's risking losing a HUGE payday for just $3 million this season.

He may find that Gardner's contract isn't one he wants to emulate - itt was a contract designed to be traded after 1 year and voided after 4 years. While the cap will go up I just don't see Sauce getting to his annual $37 million cap hit in 2029-2030

I would think Gonzo would want MUCH more upfront and guaranteed than Gardner got ($13.5 million) - but as far as the yearly average he's going to need to accept less than top dollar if he actually wants to be able to pocket it.

If he really wants bragging rights the Pats can add $50 or even $100 million in non guaranteed money for the final years of an extended contract, as at that point it's all imaginary anyways.

Not a super classy look Gonzo. Come on man.
Yeah, come on Gonzo, hurry up and sign now so you leave money on the table. Anything else is not super classy don’t ya know.

who is to say the Pats are waiting?
He is eligible for a deal and doesn't have one yet.
Pats need to stop waiting around and just put a gun to his head, right?

Maybe he’s not going to accept any deal that isn’t totally crazy irresponsible spending by the team, until he sees what all the other CBs on the market end up getting?

He could have decided he’s going be the last to sign, and not considering anything until then. Is that the team’s fault?

Or maybe he’s decided he wants to hit the open market…

He isn’t ever going to just hit the open market, that would be an absolutely terrible move by the team if that were to ever happen.

Great point, PFK.

I'll be honest something about Gonzo makes me nervous in terms of his make up. Will he continue to be the same player after he's paid? I sure hope so.

Kid is 23 years old and in the prime of his career. He's proven his worth as at least a top 5 corner and he's under our control. Do the extension early, then Drake next. He is worth it to this team right now. Gonzo a Patriot, just like Revis, Law. Shut down corner. We definitely need him for our SB runs in the future...unless I'm mistaken that is our goal right?

This sort of rubbed me the wrong way. Yes, you will "get paid" but be humble, kid.
I love watching Gonzo play and want to see him to make his money. That said, I have a hard time embracing him as a favorite player because he has generated too much drama with his focus on making business decisions. Why are most elite cornerbacks and WR divas?

Are you nuts? Diva? Gonzo. Gonzo a diva, this guy is a true sportsman, quiet, no bs, no **** talking during the game, helps the opponent get up. Diva? I'd say the most professional player we've ever had. Love his non Diva attitude.

neither point is correct
I am speculating based on the belief that the Pats are willing to go top of CB market for Gonzo, yet he isn't yet signed. it is a fact that he is not signed
a top CB contract is an APY of $31-$33m apy
a top non QB contract is an APY of $40+
I assume you can do the math

The new league year is only 2 weeks old, and they are negotiating a deal that will be the biggest they have ever given a player. The fact that it hasn't gotten done in 2 weeks in no way suggests that he is looking to get 40 million a season. It's ridiculous speculation.

When has he ever created drama about business decisions?

Yeah. He's a passive aggressive *******, it seems to me, based on his manner with the press/pundits and so on. This is relevant only insofar as it might affect his play or his impact on the locker room. The team should reflect on this and make it part of their calculus as they consider what they will offer. It's a legitimate concern but I hope not a major one. Again, though, the team should decide what they are willing to pay him given this and other obviously more important factors, then stick to that number and, if he's unwilling to settle for that amount, trade him. We'd get a lot for him, no doubt, and those proceeds might well be of equal or greater value to the team than Gonzales would be. If they settle on the right number, they will be fine either way.
