Gonzo signaling…

True. The player could also value where they're at and their situation and want to get the deal done. There is also the risk that a blown achilles, ACL, etc happens in OTAs/camp and that payday goes from generational wealth to a one year "prove you're healthy" offer.

He is eligible for a deal and doesn't have one yet.
perhaps the Pats have offered and were rejected?

Mr Peabody's Wayback Machine: For decades I worried about the cap and who we'd re-sign. I love Gonzo. One of the best CB we've ever had up with & possibly better than Ty & Mike Haynes. He should get top dollar. But I no longer worry or care as much as I did in the Brady BB years. Love the Pats but I don't follow as closely and certainly don't have the deep emotional commitment. I knew my passion would flag once they left and it did.
These days I follow player status loosely. No longer do I care passionately who gets cut in September. I love Vrabes & root for Maye, Gonzo, et. al. but when things don't work out I'm no longer depressed. Just disappointed.
Sincerely hope we re-sign him but no longer emotionally involved.

It is much safer to assume Gonzalez will demand every penny he can get. I wouldn't project any sort of "his personality doesn't seem that way" kind of thinking onto it. These are people risking their future health for a decade, at absolute best, of entertainment. Period.

I would hope/expect there would be some back and forth because they will really need to get this deal done this summer. Maye is coming up next year and that will likely be a huge deal so Gonzo needs to get done before this season.

You restored my faith in this forum. This should have been the 2nd post in this thread....

NGL I was surprised not to see it as part of the first post

$8-$9m per is a lot of money to leave on the table.
not saying that is the case, but it could be

You're the one trying to claim he wants to be paid like Myles Garrett, and there is absolutely nothing to support that, so the " leaving 8-9 million on the table" is nothing more than a fiction you created, not reality.

I was pretty clear in my post I was speculating
I honestly don't think the Pats balk at an APY of $31-$33. 4 years. (on top of next year)
if the Pats offered, and Gonzo hasn't sign, what would you think?

Recently the trade market for a CB of his caliber has been 2 1st round picks but the teams in need already made their moves and I don't wanna think in a scenario of Gonzalez not playing here, but yeah that extension will cost, and if there was a trade offer on the table depending on the team you would think theere would be some temptation in trading him, 2 1st round picks from a sorry ass team you could replace him and more.
Fantastic, get a couple picks and hope they are good, but not too good because you’d have to pay them.

Or you can just pay then guy

I find it interesting that the CB taken in the first round BEFORE Gonzo (IIRC Forbes), is now out of the league. Think about that. Sometimes it's alright to come in 2nd.

Why wouldn’t Gonzo go for every dollar he can get? People here seem to have some delusion that players should be happy to be here, love the fans and take less than market value to enjoy being privileged enough to just be here

Forbes is not out of the league. He played for the Rams last season and had 18 passes defended and 3 interceptions. He actually had a decent season.

Seems like most people here are stating they hope he gets ever penny he can.

and for how long if he signs before Witherspoon
I’m wondering if the Gonzalez camp and Witherspoon camp are waiting for the other to sign.

well, just looking at the Trent McDuffie deal, it has 100m in guaranteed money... i'd be willing to pass on a few dollars for that type of guarantee...
Gonzo and Mcduffie have the very same agent as well...

As well as providing a cautionary tale about the ease of replacing Gonzo with a draft pick.

Is with the rams now per PFR...

Yes, you were speculating, but speculatingbased on absolutely nothing. Then you were talking about him leaving 8-9 million on the table by taking a top CB contract, which makes no sense at all.

neither point is correct
I am speculating based on the belief that the Pats are willing to go top of CB market for Gonzo, yet he isn't yet signed. it is a fact that he is not signed
a top CB contract is an APY of $31-$33m apy
a top non QB contract is an APY of $40+
I assume you can do the math

Here's what an adult would do: take a look at the (evolving) market and determine what a reasonable range of compensation is in that market for this asset. Then consider what he is worth to you, given where your team is with respect to current roster assets and needs and with respect to the financial assets you have to spend. Taking these two perspectives into account, decide what he is worth to you. Share that number with no one. Negotiate. If you can't get him for that number - for that firm, fixed number - trade him to the highest bidder.

Ignore everything else: fans, pundits, national gossips, hopes, fears, your need for validation or whatever the **** Oprah et al are calling it these days, the impact on your rep with the fellas, and so on. It's a business, but really it's no different than buying a used car. or, I suppose, a work truck, since that too is an asset on which you hope to make a profit.

you are of course correct
but the team is a SB contender, and trying to send a message to the players and fans. Vrabel has been vocal about it.
losing Gonzo would be a major mistep on and off the field
he plays a premium, non QB position, and is arguably top 3 in the league
both sides are trying to navigate what the cap will look like 3-5 years out as they negotiate today.

trading Gonzo while he is unsigned reduces his value
