Player Signing Romeo Doubs Signs

He is a good addition. I don't like him as a #1.

But I still don't think him being signed means they are out of the AJ Brown race. What could happen is Boutte could end up being part of the trade package though.
Agreed.. Boutte factors in to be a solid #3 option here... say you get AJ.. now your talking AJ, doubs and Boutte as your top 3 guys.. I feel pop is more likely a trade candidate..

How many yards and receptions do you expect a WR2 to have?

You made the claim that Doubs had proven himself "to be that Guy". Since when is "That guy" just a #2 receiver?

1. I admittedly didn't spend a lot of time on this board before free agency. Were you calling for us to trade for Moore before Buffalo did?

2. Do we now need to build our roster in which our goal is to prevent the Bills from improving?
We were thinking it Caleb's Rookie year: him and Moore just didn't click. Buffalo had a better Draft position after last season.

Steve Smith on Doubs.

"He's an excellent #2 who can develop into a true # 1 because he has a lot of those traits".

I beat you to this about 10 pages back lol

I disagree. It is not just McDaniels, the Colts hate the Pats and vice versa. Plus they are probably pissed that we drove the price up on Pierce. Trading Pittman to the Pats was never going to happen period. Who are these players that are out there that the Pats could sign that are better than Doubs, curious to see this list.
Everybody drove the price up on Pierce.

Maybe the Colts should be concerned with how badly they are mismanaging their team.

The Pats issue with Meyers wasn't so much letting Meyers walk. It was they replaced him with crap. Meyers was never irreplaceable. Replacing him with a guy who was completely shot in JuJu Smith Schuster made him seem that way.
Absolutely disagree. The core issue was letting him go. Then replacing him with garbage. And we all knew JJSS was trash.

It was a painful lesson to learn. One they should not repeat.

Well if I was going to argue with Patsfan2, why? He's only cracked 1,000 yards once while Moore has done it 4 times.

If Pierce, Moore and Doubs were all the same age, all free agents and all signed for the exact same contract, then of course we can be upset on missing out. But Pierce is much more expensive, Moore is older and cost a high draft pick. We're not talking about equals here.

But the question was mainly for Patsfan2, who I have very little doubt would have been happy to pay a WR with one 1,000 yard season the most money of any free agent WR in history. (And I would have been happy signing him too) It's just pretty obvious it all comes down to not liking a player more than anything else.

We were thinking it Caleb's Rookie year: him and Moore just didn't click. Buffalo had a better Draft position after last season.

Love DJ Moore Buffalo beat us to him: he's going to be Great with Allen to our dismay.
DJ Moore is a good player, he'll help Buffalo. Watched a lot of his tape hoping he sucked but he didn't.

On Tape I'd take Doubs though. Taller, bigger hands, younger, better feet. Gets open way more often.

Pre 2025 Moore might have been different. Advanced analytics in 2025 suggested Moore lost a step. He was #1 in separation in 2023. Now 76th. Was it the offense or was it him?

2 good players, interesting to see who ends up doing more for their team.

Key stats
-Romeo Doubs ranked 5th among NFL WR's and TE's in separation
-DJ Moore ranked 76th

Separation is one of the most telling stats on a WR.

Also:
Analytics from the 2025 season highlight that nearly 80% of Doubs' targets came at the first two levels of the defense (short and intermediate), where he was most effective at exploiting zone voids. His success in these areas contributed to a 137.9 passer rating when targeted, the 4th-highest mark in the league for the 2025 season.

Moore was 109.5 ranked 17th vs zone, He really struggled vs man. Gonza should be able to take him 1 on 1

That's three ITKs that said it immediately after the signing. Message sent to AJ Brown "we still want you buddy and this signing doesn't preclude us trading for you"?
I think they're all regurgitating the same crap from the same source.

On the Doubs/Boutte stuff...

My guess is the Doubs deal will be structured with all the guarantees this year and next. Low cap hit this year, jump next year since it's salary instead of bonus. Then in year 3 it's easy to cut him with minimal dead money. This time next year, I'd expect Boutte to sign the same kind of deal. So for 2027, it won't be an issue to have both because Boutte's cap hit to be low. It won't be until 2028 that both cap hits are high, at which point Doubs will be cuttable. I also anticipate both will always be tradable because of how expensive the WR market is so signed options are always somewhat in demand.

I don't think they'll ever want them on higher cap hits each to be #2/#3 (unless #1 is a rookie scale guy), but if those guys are #1/#2 like they are now, it's ok if both have high cap hits. They'll keep trying for a real #1 though and if that comes via a big salary player then they'll always be able to move on from one of them IMO.

Seahawks # 2 this year was Cooper Kupp
Patriots #2 this year was Kayshon Boutte
Rams #2 this year was Davante Adams
Broncos #2 this year was Troy Franklin
Steelers #2 this year was Calvin Austin
Texans #2 this year was Jayden Higgens
Bills #2 this year was Keon Coleman
49ers #2 this year was Kendrick Bourner
Bears #2 this year was DJ Moore
Packers #2 this year was Christian Watson (#1 was Doubs BTW)

So there’s your playoff teams and the #2 WR they had

If the plan is Doubs as a 2 you’re in decent shape

When you say quick, are you referring to agility such as cutting? Douglas ran a 4.38 - 40, a 4.29 3-cone and a 7.05 shuttle. We don't have a comparison for Doubs because he was injured for the combine and his Pro-Day. Boutte ran a 4.5 40, a 4.25 3-cone and a 7.14 shuttle. When I hear "quick" I think of a guy like Edelman who ran a 6.68 shuttle and 3.92 3-cone.
I'm talking about what I see on the field instead of combine numbers. He is more elusive than our other WRs. I would say that's also true of Diggs even at his advanced age. Doubs doesn't have that same kind of ability either.

Love DJ Moore Buffalo beat us to him: he's going to be Great with Allen to our dismay.
Why do you love DJ Moore? He was a painfully pedestrian player for Chicago last year and essentially the same stats as Doubs and we didn’t have to send a 2nd for him

It's like the naysayers haven't been following the Pats at all the last 25 years. This team has won 6 Superbowls WITHOUT having a #1 WR. In fact, one of the major tenets of the offense over those years was NOT to have a #1 WR. The philosophy was to spread the ball around to all the available receivers, so the defense can't focus one or two targets and take them out of the game like Bill used to do so often to great effect.

If 25 years is too long a time for you to remember, how about we go back one year. You know the season we surprised the entire league by going to the ****ing Superbowl. The year we had a top 3 passing offense and no clear #1. This is what is going to happen as long as Josh is running the offense.

We should be rejoicing at getting a 6'2 WR who is known for having great hands and the knack of creating space at the point of attack. Steve Smith's analysis SHOULD be eye opening for the doubters. Unfortunately, the "cult" is so locked into their own little world that no one other than Randy Moss level WR will ever satisfy their obsessive need to find that #1 WR, whether we need him or not.

Now we still need to add a LB, TE and Edge to the mix before the draft, so the draft can be all about the quality of player rather than an immediate need. So resign Chassion, add Chenal and Njoku and pat yourself on a solid FA period
Actually JUST watched Smith’s analysis and it was interesting because Smith can be a tough grader. I’ll trust him over my own eyes.

Hope Doubs ends up a great pickup.

What’s even more interesting is multiple sources reporting that signing him does nothing to their interest in Brown.

If the plan is Doubs as a 2 you’re in decent shape
Unless part of the plan is to hope that Boutte magically becomes a #1

I think he will get better, but that is asking a lot
