Patriots Rumor Alec Pierce question

A report indicating the Patriots are potentially in the market for this player, or have expressed or plant to express interest.
This. The rest of his list is solid. I’d add Nashville, Atl (though they actually live and practice up near me in the suburbs an hour from Atlanta), TX, AZ, etc.

Years ago I worked in biotech a lot and SF was a nice spot along with Sunnyvale and Mountainview. Now?

SF is an absolute literal ****hole.
I accept the view of SF. I would also point out to those who have never left New England that SF doesn't play in downtown SF. There are many very happy and wealthy tech community very close to the stadium.

If I seem a bit snarky, I just don't understand how folks think that Providence and Boston are so much better as a place to live for rich 26-year-olds.

I gave a quick list, and yes Nashville belongs on that list.

There are many others that are likely to be viewed more favorable than Boston/Providence. a very low bar. Almost any city in the South or West would likely be preferable.

Of course, I'm very biased. I did live in CA for 10 years. After living in NE for 35 years, I retired in the South. and am very happy with the choice.

Posters argue that players do not want to sign in MA because the taxes are too high, and then argue that players want to sign in CA where the taxes are higher.

Lots of players are not looking for Nightlife. D Maye, T Henderson, W Campbell, etc. for example.

D Maye's wife has a cooking channel on Tik Tok. She made chocolate chip cookies for all of the travelers on Jet Blue to the SB - 100s if not 1000s of cookies - I am sure Drake helped some. It is a common misconception that all athletes like nightlife and strip clubs. Alex Pierce graduated with a degree in Mech Engineering. Do you think the nightlife in LA is packed full with engineers? LOL
If Brown or Pierce is married and have cooking channels on Tik Tok, perhaps they might love New England, but probably not.

I don't see it as snarky, just personal preference and a very broad generalization.
Everyone is different, and some prefer the allures of the big sexy city and some prefer certain weather.
Some don't.
During the season the players don't have a lot of free time to explore, and many live elsewhere in the offseason.
We have no idea what drives Pierce.
Being 26 and rich doesn't automatically make him thirst for the sun of the south.

That's a proposed tax on billionaires, so it wouldn't affect 99.999% of athletes even if it becomes law and holds up in court.
You are right, I am wrong The wealth tax probably would not apply to Pierce.

My thought is the same though. Posters are concerned about FAs not signing with the Pats due to MA taxes, but think players will ignore the taxes in CA because the players want the endorsements and nightlife. Lots and lots of players never get any endorsements and are not interested in nightlife.

Pierce might prefer the Chargers for his personal reasons. We will see. I am hopeful we sign Pierce. I like hard working, tough players like Pierce.

You somehow missed the whole point.

Pierce is a midwestern guy who played for a year at UNC (not while Maye was there). In an interview, he said that Tennessee sounded nice because it was nearby and Buffalo sounded great because it had Josh Allen. I don't think geography is as nearly important to this guy as to the posters in this thread.

I agree.

However, even if Pierce personally likes whatever you think Providence/Boston provides, even that might be more available elsewhere.

If a player wanted a family oriented are for his family, why is Boston and its kind of victory celebrations a draw? There are many cities that are more family-oriented, in the South and in the North. I mention the nightlife merely because many rich 26 year olds like nightlife, whether they married or not, even if their wife likes making cookies.

Paying CA taxes is a better choice?
If you're making 100 million dollars and you're worried about a couple of % in taxes (remember, half your games are on the road), then...well, I just give up.

The money is just ego at that point, and that's based on gross, not net. There is no difference in your life in making 23 vs. 25 million dollars a year. None.

Posters have not been to SF recently. They do not understand what SF is now.

5% wealth tax in CA and posters think players are flocking there? A wealth tax is not an income tax, a wealth tax includes 5% of your overall wealth, so if the player has any publicly traded stock and bonds, private business interests, and even art, for example, they lose 5% of that too.
There's no wealth tax in California, and the one proposed would only affect people who have over $1 BILLION...that's a thousand million dollars.

And yeah, no one wants to live out there, which is why I've got a line of people wanting to buy my house out in SoCal for about twice what I paid for it (brand new) just a few years ago.

I've been all over this country a lot that last 30 years. Lots of great places out there. But if I was a rich 26-year-old, I'd be in South Bay...just a few miles south of LA. Freaking heaven.

Just my preference. Unfortunately, my kids and grandkids are all here now, so I'm out shoveling a f***ing roof!

The one thing that has been left out of this discussion is Pierce's statement that he wants to play for a team with a winning culture, and no team this century has a better winning culture than the Patriots do. 6 Lombardi's, 10 AFC Championships, and they played in the Super Bowl last season. Pierce's statement on what he's looking for is tailor made to sign with the Patriots. That obviously doesn't guarantee that will happen, but it certainly places them in a prime position to sign him if they want to do so.

That is the truth!

But im not sure it’s an added dimension. Forcing a bunch of targets to a guy who will get #1 focus doesn’t seem like a plus to our offense.
The point is Brown can line up as an X or a Z and be more of a possession receiver. He more versatile than Pierce. But again, I'm not advocating for Brown over Pierce.

I bought my house in MA 11 years ago and its value has gone up 4x.

The housing market is different discussion. Lots of kids in their 20s and 30s can not afford a house. I don't want to start discussing the housing crises.

Agreed.

I grew up in Maine, left at 27 and have been in the south ever since. We take the kids to Maine every summer but I’d never move back. Too cold, not much to do, high taxes.

While the South has become “home” I’ll admit that in my travels I’ve found plenty of places that I’d live in before going back to NE.

McDaniel signing as the OC in LA was a really good move. Not only did Herbert need this badly, but McDaniel is going to attract a guy like Pierce. It's going to be tough to compete is LA pursues Pierce.

Disagree, for all the reasons already stated. And why on earth would any offensive player choose Mike MacDaniel over Josh MacDaniels? One has multiple rings and the other is an abject failure with a wet brain,

He's WR friendly. On the other hand, Josh's system requires mind reading and Jedi mind tricks. In the end, Pierce will make that determination.
