Patriots Player Departure Stefon Diggs Cut.

Not too surprising. The cap hit did not match the production. I would not be too surprised if they talk about a return on a smaller deal later if he doesn't find a robust market.

Let's go get Pierce or AJ Brown.

Could also stem from his off field issues

He was set to make $22.5M this year between salary and per game/workout bonuses. $1.7M of that is guaranteed salary they still have to pay so I guess you can say it was a $20.8M decision.

He was good last year but he's going to be 33 next year. I think it's a solid choice to add another $20.8M to their spending power this offseason and pursue younger players.

It does leave a massive hole in production at WR so some of their spending this offseason needs to be there now, that's for sure.

Where are all the guys who downvoted me a couple weeks ago when I said there was no way Diggs was back?
I’m gonna guess the sides couldn’t agree on a restructure and also wanted to get younger.

I don’t think this is from the legal stuff directly. They already sounded like they weren’t super concerned about it.

Oh we’re going big game hunting. Let’s go.

Schultz is plugged into agents, so this is significant... If they want Pierce, I think they can lock him down. They have the cap, and Diggs' release certainly helps with that. I think they need a guy like Pierce a lot more than a guy like Diggs.

Diggs isn't being cut to be replaced by a draft pick, this is freeing up money for another expensive WR.

You can replace the Diggs production with an upgrade at tight end or someone cheaper but the money part is for a true #1.

Saw this coming after Vrabel's comments about getting younger and cheaper and his $ number was just too high for his age and what he is now on the field... but I'm still glad we had him this season. Thank you 8.

There was no way he was coming back at the number.

The Pats can do better now that Maye have proved him self.

I think he had a solid season but the off-field stuff with him and his age makes this a smart move. I also like the fact that this basically forces them to make a move to add a #1 WR.

I appreciate what Diggs did to us, I really do. And I wished he would be there next year. But the salary and off field issues make me feel ok about him being cut. Obviously it weakens our middling receiving corps, so obviously we have to focus on improving it.

One good thing is we shouldn’t have to focus on the last receivers available in free agency like we did with Diggs this year. Free agents want to get paid, but they also would love to go to a team that is a Super Bowl contender, as well as have a great QB. The 2025 season should make free agent WRs interested in coming to the Pats.

Land one or 2 guys in FA, and it will be less of a priority in the draft. Land an edge in FA, and then WR will be a priority in the draft. Either way, WR, Edge & Oline are the priorities now.

Interesting. Beyond Pierce there’s not much in free agency. So I think they’re probably looking at all the trade options, too.
