2026 Draft: Safety

Sorry for the repeat but James Foster has just released a Stukes cut-up and scouting report. I do think he's a perfect fit for this defense, especially if they don't re-sign Hawkins.

Bud Clark of TCU was the stand out safety at the Senior Bowl and if you're looking for a FS type, he's your guy.

In his last four seasons he's averaged 4 interceptions a season and 5 PBUs a season.

But here we go again. He's been in college for 6 years and is 25. I realise COVID and NIL are factors, but I've never so many aged players in a draft.

If they're healthy then the NFL clock starts now. I think if you get your money's worth, 5-8 years out of a player whether he stays with your organization or not, it's a helluva good thing. If it's a QB maybe you want more years but anyone else, pure gravy.

Cory Kinnen and JP Acosta of CBS talking positively about Zakee Wheatley's Senior Bowl performance at 27:37 in the below vid. Hopefully the link will take you straight there. Checked it and it does.

Both comment on his fluidity.

Followed by a Bud Clark take.

#4 hurts.

#9, #12 and #16 give some hope.

Scott is difficult to pigeonhole, but he is easy to like - he is just too good. He is one of the most impactful defensive players not on the DL in this draft.

Can we do better? I would love to get a safety in this draft, but there are so many needs, im not sure.

It is a lot however I'm also a fan of continuity so I'm undecided.
I am a fan of continuity too, but I don't think the rebuild is complete. I think we need more key players in key positions, like FS, before I switch over to continuity mode. You are right, until the rebuild is complete, continuity will take a hit from time to time. Hawkins, for me, is not part of the long term plan.

The question is who.

Wheatley - He's similar to Woodson. Too similar?
Stukes - I think he can play FS allowing Woodson to do what he does best in defending the run. He does have limited snaps as a FS though so there would be a bit of a learning curve.
Thieneman - Ideal, but do we want to spend a 1st on a safety.
Ramsey - Has experience at FS although not this year.
McNeil-Warren - See Thieneman.
Genesis Smith - Legitimate FS but tackling issues.

Stukes is my choice but one of the things I like about him is his versatility - he can pretty much play anywhere in the defensive backfield. It seems a waste to restrict him to one position only so we'd probably need to sign a vet anyway. I think I'd give Hawkins his contract depending on what the guaranteed money is, draft Stukes and give him a year of unpressured development and cut Hawkins at season end.
