Who coached the more impressive Pats turnaround: Belichick or Vrabel?

2025: As we know the Pats were 4-13 back to back and now they're 17-3 and looking for a championship. That has never been done. They just won a playoff game in Denver which they've also never done.
2000-2001: IMO the Pats weren't in as dire roster straits as that when Bill joined the team in 2000 but we all know what the pundits were saying about the team going into the 2001 season and absolutely none of it was flattering. Then Bill chose Brady over Drew, stuck with him and the rest is history.

Both are super impressive but if you had to pick one?

I lean toward Bill right now firstly because the 2025 Pats still need to win one game and secondly Bill had to put his job on the line with one of his decisions that sparked the turnaround (Brady over Drew) and Vrabel hasn't had to do that yet.

Vrabel. By all accounts the Patriots were the worst team in football in 24', and just as bad in 23'. No one wanted to play here and the consensus was that it would take years to contend again. Belichick's Patriots had Bledsoe, Law, McGinest, Faulk etc..., they weren't completely devoid of talent.

Very true. The core sans Brady of course was all there back then.

gotta say it, the Pats were already pretty strong before Belly ever got here. He helped us get over the hump, but we had a defense that was more or less in its prime to work with thanks to the regimes that came before.

LoL Vrabel was spoon fed Maye. Bill had to create Brady and build him from 199 to GOAT.

The difference in the talent level is significant. The team BB took over talent wise was pretty good. I remember daring to post early on that BB was winning with bobby griers draft picks. Vrable took over a team pretty much devoid of talent.

But for reference in 2000 the team talent was not good, the economics stunk with a bunch of large contracts at the top and not much for the rest. The owner and management also were committed to a big strong armed QB who wasn’t very efficient. The 2001 turnaround was a miracle, and no… not just because of Tom Brady who did enough. The roster was a duct taped together hodge podge of value vets nobody else in the league wanted. A bunch of old guys, blue collar guys… that was impressive.

The 2025 team had the third most money and cap space available and their franchise QB. What they did in the offseason was a masterclass in team building… the opposite of what we saw the season prior.

Both were impressive but the 2001 team was a miracle. The 2025 team was only “unlikely” to the negative nancy’s who don’t recognize talent or when a front office is doing a great job of it. Top ten offense, top five defense when healthy, superior special teams… this team was built really well… but they had all the resources in the world.

Vrabel inherited just as much talent if not more.

Maye, Gonzo, Barmore, and Marcus just to name a few.

I guess a followup point to this and another reason why I'm leaning Bill for now is that the Patriots were not a one-off in 2001. They did miss the playoffs the following year (although tied for best record in the division) but then went on a historic run. I'd like to think the 2025 Patriots are also not a one-off but they have to show it first. Tougher schedule next year but they do have the cap room and another draft to get even better and I expect they will.

The question is about a one year accomplishment, not a lifetime achievement award. It's like the thread posted earlier this year about who is a better coach, Belichick or Vrabel, the question was about now, not historically. If it was historically it wouldn't even be a question because Belichick has 6 rings as a head coach, but right now Vrabel is the better coach.

I'm going with Vrabel also, but the situations are almost identical. Both had a 2nd year QB and added many new FAs. The difference is that Vrabel did it in his first year and Bill did it in his second.

Kinda hard to compare.

In 2000 BB inherited cap issues and needed the year to clean that up whereas Vrabes had a ton of cash to work with.

Vrabes inherited a talented QB that became a franchise QB.

BB inherited a talented QB that needed to play for a year and two games until the actual franchise QB was ready.

At the end of the day both coaches had/have implemented their respective cultures successfully and got them to play to their potential as a team in a short period of time.
