Question for you, Mr Primetime, is who would be the starter chosen in a head to head QB competition between Hoyer and Dalton?
My bet would be on Dalton, albeit not by any great margin but my overall impression is that he’d be the stronger performer by a bit.
I’d also be bringing him in partly to see how Stidham responds. If he is going to be our QBotF he’ll respond to the challenge and rise to the occasion. If his ego is so fragile that it affects his confidence he’s too much of a snowflake to be a winning NFL starter. But if he wins the starting job over Dalton it would be more of a boost than winning it, or having it handed to him, over Hoyer. Hoyer is a known quantity, he’s been in the Pats’ locker room as a backup. Dalton comes in with more extensive experience and better credentials as an NFL starter and playoff QB than Hoyer.
Dalton's definitely been the better player over the course of his career. I don't think he's appreciably worse than, say, Eli Manning was during his Super Bowl years, but do I think the Patriots roster is set-up to win a Super Bowl right now absent an extraordinarily lucky or good QB year? Probably not.
That said, I think it's more likely than not that Stidham turns out to be a worse QB than Andy Dalton. I just worry about guys like Dalton because I feel like they're safe and just good enough that you never feel totally comfortable moving away from them, but not good enough to carry a team, so you end up in the Joe Flacco rut.
