How Can the Pats Stop the Ravens?

Our offense has to show some consistency before i believe they can put up a lot of points on that ravens defense. They have 5 games remaining to shore up that offense otherwise it could get very complicated in the playoffs.
You are free to believe whatever you want but without Wynn, without ruining the ball and while playing from behind we probably win the game if Edelman doesn’t fumble.

If you play a 4-1-6 they will run for 500 yards.
100% true, they could run wild, but it would come more slowly in smaller chunks than when LJ can run free. This would mean they might not score so quickly and so prodigiously, which might allow Pats to stay in the game if they could play ball control.

There are no surefire or easy answers to a guy like LJ who can run with power and yet quick enough to easily make the edge , yet he has now developed as an accurate passer at all distances. If he gets injured that changes everything, but a healthy LJ with that physical offensive line, Ingram and Edwards, a top tier TE like Andrews and a lighting quick vertical threat makes them a very very tough matchup for any defensive scheme.

Wade Phillips is generally acknowledged as one of the top 2 or 3 defensive gurus in the league and yet he was just embarrassed by LJ.

No offense, but KC isn't going to be anywhere near the AFC Championship. They simply cannot compete with Baltimore.
They competed with them pretty well when they beat them

Someone, which will be Belichick if it doesn’t happen first will adjust to what they do and stop it. The wildcat was unstoppable at first. This is a glorified wildcat with a very good ol and excellent blocking TEs and fb. You aren’t going to stop that by playing what you run against everyone else. But it absolutely can be stopped.

You have to outmatch their physicality. Easier said than done. We shall see. If they do this to the 49ers i will be stunned. The rams where helpless tonight

Remember we were well on our way to a comeback win until Jules made a rare mistake. That play was a killer, they will have to pass more and run less if the game is on the line and they’re playing from behind. Problem was, they were playing from ahead for most of the game and could just grind it out with the run. I do think someone on offense is going to have to step up and contribute. 13 points won’t cut it against Baltimore.

We heard all this leaving up to the Sunday night game at Baltimore... Didn't work out too well
Did you study the defense we employed in that game. It was blatantly obvious we did not design a raven specific scheme. It’s understandable because it’s harder to do in the regular season but we will do most everything differently in a rematch.

When he runs those option plays, have the defender bury him under the stadium.

Yeah, even if hes not the ball carrier, keep hitting him over and over again if he pretends to keep it

That is how they play the RPO in college, always go after the QB and eventually it takes a toll. Like you said even if it mean ignoring the guy he pitches to. By the second half LJ will get more gun shy about running that option.

Without going into an entire game plan, first we will have a completely different game plan than the first time which was a basic game plan not really tailored to a wildcat like offense.
When they come out in 1 wr we need to play 4-4 with 2 safeties and 1 corner. The interior needs to mix it up one gap, 2 gap, slant, etc to confuse the blocking scheme. LBs need to attack the TE/Fb and play 2 gap discipline on them while not letting them release for 3 yard passes. Beating the te/fb blocks is a key. When they run option reads the optioned defender needs to 100% of the time plant Jackson in the ground.
Make them throw on passing downs rather than on running downs when the dual threat running game leaves the first read wide open a few yards downfield.

Offensively we need to run the ball more and get chunk plays in the passing game. The no huddle worked and will again. If we are healthy we will score a lot of points against that defense.

I have a feeling that there’s no way in hell BB will allow Jackson to gash his defense on the ground again. Worth noting that the ravens beat us twice in 2012 but the first time was a much closer game. Obviously going to have to do some things different next time around assuming we get the opportunity.

Not sure what you mean by “outmatch their physicality” but whatever you really need to do is use a scheme that matches up to their personell ( you aren’t stopping any team with a good OL, 3 Te a running qb and 1 wr from nickel) play with discipline to run fits because of option and cutback, and run one in one battles.

Just wanted to know everyone's thoughts on how the Pats can beat the Ravens. Obviously, they are our biggest roadblock to SB 54...they look unreal right now, but I'd like to think Bill will come up with something in the rematch. Do we have anyone who can spy Jackson? Maybe Collins? Our Run D is ranked 10th in the league and they have a great running game. That could be a problem.
We can beat the Ravens by limiting turnovers and running the ball with more effectiveness. Jackson gets in the zone and slowing him down with clock management sucks energy out of the room for the Ravens great offensive scheme.

In our game with the Ravens, we were competitive with a poor offense limited in what it could do in the second half due to injuries. Get Harry up to speed, rely on Senu as much as Edelman, and hammer Michel. If we focus on getting our offense humming, I'm confident we can score points.

On defense, commit more to the run with the safeties on run blitzes. Give up big plays as long as we get them frustrated in the running game and generate some turnovers with some pass blitzes. Just keep throwing the kitchen sink at Jackson and try to generate mistakes rather than worrying about big plays. The WORST thing you can do against the Ravens is allow them to march down the field in a slow, methodical fashion that leaves you exhausted. River boat gambling is how you take down this Goliath.

If the Ravens play their best, they will win. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that they are peaking a little too early and all the hype might get in the way in a game later this season. The way they are acting in interviews suggests they might be starting to drink the Koolaid. I wonder how Jackson does under pressure after a few mistakes.

Then the turnovers start.

I'm surprised they didn't do that the first time, def swarm the ball, but if a guy is near jackson, lay the wood

Yeah I think you may need to play more gap discipline and clog the run lanes rather than try to crash the line. Jackson is to fast for that, he almost always makes the guy miss.

It may mean giving up 2 or 3 yards on runs rather than getting the stop behind the line, but at least you are creating some punts

Like I said, they have had the luxury of playing ahead for the last few weeks. When playing from ahead, they are able to slow down the game and play at their pace. If they were down 10-0 or 17-0, Jackson would be forced to pass more in order to score more quickly.

It’s a very good ol (particularly including the te and fb). They call plays that have 2 choices of where to run, they run Jackson, basically picking whatever hole he wants.
The real key is mixing it up. One gap creates pressure but gets gashed if blow the guy out of the hole. 2 gap means you have smaller players getting blocked by bigger players and trying to hold their ground while adding the advantage that 2 players are resp for every gap.
You game plan blocking schemes differently for each. Our defense is very capable of mixing and matching.

not just pass more but pass other than in situations where the defense is selling out to stop the run

What? You are going to play 6 dbs against 1 wr, 3 te and a running qb and accept that you will get destroyed but hope it takes more plays to allow the td?
You defend Jackson like any running qb. The ravens are winning with power at the line of scrimmage. They are winning because they are opening huge holes. You need to defend that with power.

9 in the box. Man to man. Funnel everything to the inside.

Beat them at their own game. Possession football. Their ability to run the clock the way they run the ball is exceptional.

I don’t think the chargers plan from the wildcard game from last year even with a guy like derwin James would work.

not sure what personnel teams have been employing but considering they have a great cover guy in Gilmore, maybe they really try to load that box up. 5-2? 4-4?
