Jarrett may have a future as an NFL QB, but we certainly don't know that yet based on 3 preseason games against mainly scrubs. Best thing for his future chances is to sit on the bench, watch, learn, and shut the **** up.
Remember he is competing against Hoyer not Brady. I just think he has shown enough to make me comfortable putting him behind Brady and freeing up that extra roster spot.

So, you're willing to risk that a 42-year-old quarterback will miss no time, and gamble without having a competent backup?

I don't think Belichick will take that risk.

Your post is really hightlighting the issue, IMO. Does BB think Stidham, who's not ready to be the #2, is close enough to ready to be the #2 that he can get rid of the guy who's already a capable #2 and is able to fill in as the #1, if needed? He lucked out in 2012, the year he cut Hoyer and kept Mallet, because Mallet was not ready, and never got ready. Is he willing to take that gamble again?

That's what we're going to find out.

Doesn't BB eventually want a Favre to Rodgers type situation?

I think Stidham will be a better qb than Hoyer in a couple of months. He is already a better thrower. I rather have another player taking up a roster spot than Hoyer.

Of course. Now, imagine Rodgers was a 4th round pick instead of a 1st rounder - and instead of a pro passing offense, he came from the read option.

Deus nailed it. Belichick went with Just Mallett in 2012. It's entirely possible he'll do that again, that said, there's a difference from 35 year old Brady, and 42 year old Brady.

I seriously hope Stidham isnt another Mallett.

I think something needs to be said that applies both to the QB and WR positions, and it's something I wish I didn't have to say:

If King's injury is as bad as some seemed to think, we're looking at a roster spot, that many thought was locked in, now being open.

They keep 3 QB’s.

When Brady first came into the league, he was thrilled to be throwing to anyone. His favorite pass-catchers ever were the guys on the field with him, even if they were Jermaine Wiggins and Charles Johnson. He made it work and seemed pleased with whatever results he got.

Now when Brady is in, he seems to be stressing about who is and isn't reliable, and the receivers are acting stressed. He threw behind Meyers on one play -- Meyers should have caught it, but it wasn't a good throw -- and on the next route Meyers ran a soft route and Brady was barking at him immediately. Which is fine, but it seems to take receivers a while to play fast on the field with Brady.

It's not anything that can be helped, but it's hard not to notice.

It's so easy to flip flop from one game to the next with new players but after last night Stidham looks like he needs a lot more experience at this level. That's good news for Hoyer this year IMO.

Compare Stidham to the alternative, rather than the ideal.

Hoyer is not better than Stidham. I would not consider him a particularly competent backup either. He's a film room fanatic with a noodle for an arm. If we had to fill in longterm at QB1 and Hoyer was our only option, I, in Bill's shoes, would be looking outside the organization. Maybe make a deal for Mullens from SF.

Stidham is already a superior option at QB2. We don't win superbowls with either one, but there's certainly more upside in letting Stidham develop on the job rather than running the ghost of Brian Hoyer out there every Sunday. I know which one I'd rather be trying to coach/coax wins out of.

Are you talking about Brian Hoyer?

Because you can't possibly be talking about Brian Hoyer.

Have you looked at film from last year when he was starting in SF?

The guy used to be an adequate journeyman QB1 but that was 4+ years ago, now he grades out as a fringy QB2 who's lost a lot of physical ability but compensates by being a film room fanatic.

The point here is, if we lose Hoyer, we haven't lost much. He gets a lot of praise for his prepwork off the field, but you don't need to spend a roster spot on that -- if you really need him for his scout team work, release him and hire him as a coaching assistant. That's what coaching assistants are for.

I don't think any of us would actually be able to stand what the football would look like in New England if Brian Hoyer was starting multiple Sundays in a row.

I consider Brian Hoyer a false option. He's adequate for the sole reason that he never sees the football field. I'd rather put a rookie with development potential in that spot TBPH

I'm not sure where people get the Hoyer is a competent backup QB but Stidham isn't ******** get from.

Ideally, I’d love to just keep Stud-arm & GOAT, but apparently Hoyer does have value to the team. I’m just glad I don’t have to make these decisions.

I am glad it's BB and McDaniels who will make the decision in the end. But on those plays Stidham got sacked Hoyer wouldn't have a prayer and he's less mobile too.

Neither one is a good backup. Stidham is too green and Hoyer's best days, which were not all that great, are behind him.

Both Hoyer and Brady are Free Agents next year.
I extend Hoyer now for similar money ($1.5 mill)
Studham should have a vet on the roster to be his 2nd pair of eyes/sounding board next year.
The other guy.....what’s his name.....20 years is a nice round number. Get him a nice watch and a sweet set of men’s satchels and tell him to have a great trip down to Dallas and not to forget his nifty hats.

One more trophy case adornment is forthcoming
