Let me try this AGAIN. Between his $15MM in salaries and bonuses and the $12MM prorated signing bonus for this season, Brady's income for this year is essentially $27MM. Where does that put him????
That’s irrelevant. Those are cap numbers rolling over from previous contracts. If he signs an extension, they will keep rolling them. E.g. if he signs a 2yr $40m extension today, he will have remaining 27 + 2*20 = $67m cap hit over next 3 years and if they wanted they can set it up that his cap hit is 15 per year for this year and next year and 37m in 3rd year. Then come 2021 you’ll be telling me he’s making $37m this year.
It doesn’t work like that.
Basically Brady’s last deal was a 2 year $41m extension. At that point the biggest QB contracts were in the $23-24m range and Brady was at #10 ish. Since then QB salaries have really inflated so if Brady is to take another hometown discount (despite being NFL MVP and reaching 3 and winning 2 Superbowls since his last extension) and wants to be #10ish again, he’ll get paid about $25-27m ish.
The debate seems to be whether you should pay a 44-45 year old that salary (a 2 year extension from now would mean he’s locked for 3 years). Brady would argue he has had no deterioration in performance so age doesn’t factor into it but BB and/or Kraft might think differently.
The situation is tricky. It’s also indicative that many on these forums, despite being Brady homers, think he has “no market” and will “sign for anything” and also think it’s stupid to “pay $20m for a 45 tear old QB”.
Sets up both sides at loggerheads.
Answer could be a one year extension but if Brady plays the year without getting an extension I think we're asking for trouble. Kraft has repeatedly said he hated how Marino and Manning and Favre’s careers ended and he’ll do right by Brady. He can’t let Brady start the season without an extension done.
