Bedard: Patriots could have over $70 million in cap space next season … what are they up to?

Zero stock. Other than health or serious dip in play it's a given TB12 will be here next year.
Yeah it’s hard to take the anonymous sources seriously. But it’s hard to imagine they don’t have a plan in place just in case. Whether they draft a quarterback this year or not will tell us all we need to know about that report.

They could draft or not draft a QB whether that report is accurate or not.
Regardless of any expectations for brady, having a successor in line just in the event he sustains a serious injury makes sense.
Regardless of whether he is expected back next year if a QB they feel is worth picking is there, they won’t take one. This qb class isn’t exactly earth shattering.

That’s easily dealt with, make him the highest paid QB but no guaranteed money. Each season he plays he gets 30 million.
Why would brady accept a contract with no guaranteed money?

You had Kraft explicitly saying that Brady will not go into the regular season on an expiring contract in a QuickSlants iview before the SB.

I fail to see why anyone would go with anonymous sources over what Kraft said and what Brady keeps saying. 45 is the goal.

Ha.

I just don't think its in his DNA. I vaguely remember a beat-writer asking him about the Dolts/Suck for Luck campaign and he went off on how baffled he was with how Polian left the QB position exposed and that would never be something he would do and in closing said something like the best way to rebuild a team is to win games.
I also believe he has a system to train QBs in place with Josh. Brady is the GOAT but he was not a number 1 pick obviously. I loved Bledsoe, but Brady replaced a number 1 pick. Montana was a 3rd rounder.

I know, I know, for the most part the successful QBs come from the first round, but I do not think Belichick or Parcells would ever tank. They would gladly take a highly drafted QB, like Testerverde, but they got him on his second or third team.

That is why I could see the Pats never tanking, staying in the hunt, and potentially get someone like Rosen, or even another veteran.

But what do I know.

If Brady's play slips this year or he retires after the 7th Superbowl win....
Maybe take a run at Marcus Mariota who is an UFA in 2020.

I know most will say that is idiotic, that he sucks.
But maybe McDaniels turns him around. He does have 5 years of experience.

Drafting a QB this year does not confirm this report. It's inevitable we will try for another potential future QB.

Mariota sucks. Josh is not a miracle worker.

I swear some fans underestimate how good Tom really is.

1/4 of what #? The whole cap $ of the projected available space ?
There’s no way that Brady is signing a deal long enough to get his cap hit out of the early 20s, so yeah, he will likely take up a 1/4 of the available cap space.

No. That is misleading and wrong.

They have $19,910,215 in cap this year and we don't know how much they will roll over for the next.

As of now they have $19,910,215 (2019) + $84,127,431 (2020) with the cap space projected to be 200M.

So = 104,037,646M

As Miguel said the rookies will take btw 2-3M. Use 2.5M. So let's use 6M for both years (2.5M this year + 3.5M 2020 next year)

As of now they have 12 picks this year + 9 next year = 21 picks.

Every guy that BB picked in the first 4 rounds made the squad.

So 7 this year + 6 next year = 13

Let's say Ufomba Kamalu, Christian Sam and Braxton Berrios don't make the final squad this year.

31 players signed - 3 players + 13 players drafted = 41 players signed

So = 104,037,646M - 6M for draft picks = 98,037,646M and 41 players signed

98,037,646M and 41 players signed

Lets say they spare 10M each season for cushion and 3M for PS players = 26M

So the new number = 72,037,646M

Gost is still not signed = Lets say for only math purposes he takes 4M each year (will take less IMO). That's 8M

So the new number = 64,037,646M and 42 players signed

That number will be bigger. Remember that not all 51 players will make the squad this year, they always find nice UDFA but lets keep pretending they all make the squad and they did not find ONE UDFA on TWO drafts ...

They have 64,037,646M for 11 players.

I will put the avg number next to the FA they signed, ok?

Now lets look the list of FA:

Tom Brady 26/30
Devin McCourty Retired
Julian Edelman 6.5/8
Kyle Van Noy 7/8.5/9.5
Jonathan Jones 2.5/3.5/4
Joe Thuney 6/7.5/8.5/9.5/10.5
Elandon Roberts 3.5/4/4.5
Ryan Allen 2/2.5/2.75
Ted Karras 1.3/1.5

Total = 54.8M

We need 2 more ...

Brandon King
Matt Slater
Nate Ebner

2M each?

Total = 58.8M

or

one of them

Total = 56.8M

All accounted for: PS players both years/ Draft both years/ Cushion both years (they can save a lot of money here if they are lucky).

Who else do you want for 8M per from that list? Maybe a FA? Maybe Devin if he doesn't retire?

Josh Gordon
Phillip Dorsett
Brian Hoyer
Maurice Harris
Bruce Ellington
Brian Schwenke
David Parry
Obi Melifonwu
James Ferentz
Cole Croston
Stephen Anderson
Calvin Munson
Jacob Hollister
Adam Butler
Keionta Davis
Dan Skipper
A.J. Howard
Ryker Mathews
Jake Eldrenkamp
Danny Etling
Trent Harris
Frank Herron
Damoun Patterson
Okay, but the point was that when all is said and done the available amount of space will look much different. I think you just backed that up.

I predict we will not see that happen. They will figure something out. One way or another.

You predict that Brady’s cap hit will be less than 21m dollars for 2020?

Good luck with that one. You’re not going to be able to structure a back loaded deal this time due to the length. And if the rumors are true that he’s looking for 30m a year, that will be even worse.

I don't think I offered a prediction on $. I said they will figure something out one way or another.

What I am predicting is they are not paying Tom $30m+ AAV

So is the fact that Brady’s not under contract and will almost certainly take up 1/4 of that number.

Sorry for any confusion. This is the exchange that I was responding to. I got the “21m” number from stating earlier that it would likely be 1/4 of the cap, which you seemed to question.

I just don’t see how they can realistically extend him for any more than 2 years, which would lock him up for ‘19, ‘20, and ‘21. Asking either side to commit to more than 3 more years seems to be a bit fantastical to me. I don’t see how there would be any way that would happen.

45?! Brady is playing until he's 50. Love that Shi'eatin'grin he will have for *345 Park Ave.

Thats why I asked as I didn't know what you had meant by the 1/4. 25% of 70m which is projected avail cap is $17.5m and 25% of say ~$190m which is 2019 cap (but surely 2020 will be higher. Just don't know what it is yet) is $47m.

Where did you read Tom is looking for $30m aav? Hes never made that in aav in his career. I have a tough time thinking he is expecting that now. If he is and is holding the line it'll be hard to get a deal done.

It depresses me to say this, but the bolded may no longer be a given.
Took me all day to realize your giving up on TB12 in 2020 already..... didn't learn your lesson last year. Mwhahahaha.

Drafting a QB this year does not confirm this report. It's inevitable we will try for another potential future QB.
It does if we take one high.Secondly, read your last sentence again. The keyword is “another.” Why do you think they took one the first time?

Not sure if you’re joking here but I’m giving up on him at all. I never said I believe he’s declining. If you think I have, quote it. I’ve been pretty clear on this board that I didn’t see any signs of decline last season. I stated that time and time again and went rounds with luuked over it week in and week out. The reality is that he’s going to be 42 and a decline could realistically happen any week.

Go on record: 1) Do you disagree with the last sentence? Yes or no? 2) Do you think BB keeps him on the team if a decline happens in-season and he contributes to the team losing games? Yes or no?

Yes I was just joking with you. Yes I guess you never gave up on Tom last year but you did the team lol. You didn't specifically say your giving up on Tom in 2020 but you said "It depresses me to say this, but the bolded may no longer be a given." Bolded was about TB12 taking up a chunk of 2020 cap. So you basically said it.

So that's why I decided to screw with you. Obviously the end for any player could come quick and especially one in his 40s but nothing about his play suggests its arrived or is coming this year. So I see 2020 as given.
