Hodges was on Pats pre-draft radar . projected as high as Day 2 pick

Wow. Shocking fall from grace for sure. I thought he'd go pretty high in the draft. While not a premier talent, he has the size and athleticism to thrive as a move TE. If he can't even crack the Panthers roster without Olsen and Benjamin, however, then I'm not sure I'd want him here.

Yup.

If Belichick wanted to keep Blackson, I presume that he would have been activated with Brown and Valentine injured.

I would guess this increases odds of Valentine returning which, in turn, would eliminate Mitchell returning.

Adding a QB seems right. :)

If BB truly feels like another interior lineman is needed, a good option would be to sign DT/NT Deon Simon of the Jets PS. Starting experience and BB personally interviewed him or worked him out during the draft process.

Where are the QBs?

Who needs Angelo Blackson when we have GeeNo Grossem?

More like Geno Grusome:confused: cap...him on the 53 just boggles the mind.

Mack what's the Story on Shea M?? I thought he was going to be activated?? If not I would rather the nod go to Malcolm Mitchell if there is a chance he can come back. I don't trust that Defense minus Hightower, we are going to have to outscore people to win like it or not.

He is practicing but cannot be activated until the Denver game. I think edge player is their biggest need and LBs the weakest overall position. McClellin can contribute despite his modest skills. I expect him back for Denver with HT going to IR.

Dam that definitely spells doom for Mitchell then...oh well.

Grissom is an ST-only guy, and has been since the beginning of 2016. He helps anchor all four ST units. He and Ebner are effectively tied for the lead in the number of ST snaps played per game active over the past season and a half (~22/game, the only two players above 18.5).

That said, Grissom's roster situation may be somewhat fluid.

On the one hand, new guys Marsh, Bademosi, Reilly and Marquis Flowers have been picking up significant ST snaps (with Reilly taking over Langi's ST snaps), and Richards has taken on a much more significant ST role in 2017 than he had in 2016. All of this has helped reduce the ST snaps covered by Chung and McCourty (who both played substantial ST roles last season).

OTOH, Bademosi's ST snaps were drastically reduced for weeks 7 & 8 while he was filling in at CB; his ST snaps are likely to increase again with Rowe and Gilmore back. Also, McClellin played significant ST snaps in 2016, and he may again play a fairly significant ST role when he returns.

So, there's at least some potential for Grissom to be waived back to the PS toward the end of next week to take the spot vacated by Blackson being poached.

I'm not sure who you would elevate to the active squad that is so needed that we would cut one of our most counted on STer's.

If you want to make a PS receiver active, then I disagree. I'd rather have 3 WR's active, and use a RB in the flat in 4 WR sets, or use a RB as the #3 WR if there is an injury during the game.

Also, if you want to cut a STer, I suggest that King is less valuable than Grissom, now that we have Marsh, Flowers and Bademosi.

King is a gunner so Marsh, Flowers and Grissom are irrelevant. Bademosi seems to come off ST when starting on D so he's not a great replacement for King either.

There's really no reason to get rid of the team's 2nd best gunner, especially with Slater often banged up

fair enough

Then I go back to by instincts and first proposal. No one needs to be activated.

Just to be clear, none of this is about what I want. I'm just kicking around roster moves that the Pats might make and pertinent considerations while addressing those who appear to think that Grissom has no value to the 53-man roster whatsoever.

As @mcmurtry86 pointed out, King is a gunner who's also tied for 3rd in ST tackles (with Bademosi) behind Ebner and Bolden. Marsh, Flowers and Grissom have zero ST tackles because they play different (though very valuable) roles on the coverage units.

It's not that I think Grissom is expendable. Far from it. I think that he may be somewhat more likely than King to clear waivers back to the PS, though.

I also don't think that moving a WR up from the PS is something the Pats should do, just that they might be considering it, depending on what they know about how long Hogan is likely to be out. And, I'd guess that - IF they want a 4th WR active on gameday (besides Slater) - they'd dip into the PS before picking up an SFA with no experience in the system.

I agree with all that you have posted.
